I got a free old CRT, and was planning on using it to play retro emulated games from my PC for that old gaming aesthetic. I've got an HDMI cable hooked up to a HDMI to AV converter, with an AV cable connecting into the TV's input. While it works mostly fine, there's no color. However, on the TV's menus, the text IS in color, so I know that the TV isn't so damaged as to be unable to produce color. I also know that the HDMI isn't the problem, because I hooked a monitor up to the same computer using that cable and the color was there just fine. The converter was new out of the box, but I picked up the AV cable at goodwill. Does it seem feasible that an AV cable could get damaged and be unable to output color, while working fine otherwise? What other causes/fix could you think of?
My boyfriend's old CRT TV with VHS player does this too. I don't know what causes it, but it seems like something that could happen to other TVs as well.
I've had this issue before a few times, once it was due to a NTSC\PAL mismatch with the converter (the converter being the wrong one for the TV). Another time my gamecube was doing it with one specific s-video cable and none of my other s-video cables. I guess try a different adapter and different cables.
Definitely sounds like a NTSC/PAL mismatch. Make sure the converter has have a toggle on it to switch between each mode.
The converter does have a toggle, it's black and white either way. I'll see if switching to a different AV cable helps.
Tried another AV cable, still no color, regardless of NTSC or PAL. Very odd.
I guess sometimes they're really cheap chinese products and they aren't working like they should, I have the same issue with one of my cheap ebay converters
Bought a new converter, this one wasn't such a cheapo plastic piece of crap, and it works perfectly!
Which one did you get specifically? I have the exact same problem.

There might be a better price around from other sellers
