• IIHS: Tesla Model 3 has best lane-keeping, fails static object AEB test

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has been releasing some information about their autonomous driver assist level 2 system tests in some premium sedans and they found that the Tesla Model 3 has the best lane-keeping with Autopilot’s Autosteer, but they had some issues with other aspects of Autopilot and its active safety features of both Model S and Model 3. They tested the automatic emergency braking of the BMW 5-series with “Driving Assistant Plus,” 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class with “Drive Pilot,” 2018 Tesla Model 3 and 2016 Model S with “Autopilot” (software versions 8.1 and 7.1, respectively) and 2018 Volvo S90 with “Pilot Assist”. In the test with a stationary vehicle target, they said that only the two Tesla vehicles failed: “One series involved driving at 31 mph toward a stationary vehicle target with ACC off and autobrake turned on to evaluate autobrake performance. Only the two Teslas hit the stationary target in this test. With Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) activated, which Tesla calls Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC), Tesla vehicles performed much better ... They also liked TACC: “Out on the road, engineers noted instances in which each vehicle except the Model 3 failed to respond to stopped vehicles ahead.” Tesla Model 3 found to have best lane
Wasn't that an issue previously? Why can't Tesla figure that one out
It's an issue almost all of the systems seem to have to some degree. I think it's detected by radar but ignored so as to avoid false positives. The Volvo manual for example says "Pilot Assist will ignore the stationary vehicle and instead accelerate to the stored speed". Teslas do apparently stop when you have cruise control engaged, so it seems like it's more of an issue of AEB not being sensitive enough.
The Model S was on 7.1? That's practically an invalid test. Driver assistance features have been essentially overhauled since then.
Yeah I agree. Not updating it in almost 2 years is a bit odd. But the Model 3 AP is pretty much the same so I doubt the Model S with the latest software would do much different than the 3.
