Creating ICE was a mistake, made purely to justify creating the DHS, which was also probably a mistake.
ICE's positioning in the DHS set it up for radicalization. The DHS is a bullshit department that just mashed together whatever "security" agencies it could to justify the post-9/11 security theater. That's all it is. It blended anti-terrorism, immigration, customs, law enforcement, the Secret Service, airport security, emergency management, and citizenship proceedings together - for no reason whatsoever. The blurring of immigration and citizenship proceedings under the DHS banner served to further radicalize immigration itself as a national security threat, rather than a humanitarian crisis or a civil issue. It poisoned the idea of immigration as necessarily criminal. ICE should be removed, and the DNC should roll back the entire DHS by restructuring the entirety of the Executive. TSA, if it survives, should be a part of the DOT.
People aren't going far enough by calling for the end of ICE. Wipe out the entire DHS. It only exists because of 9/11, and has done less than nothing in preventing any other forms of domestic or international terrorism. It's split up the chain of command in executive agencies between various departments and worsened government efficiency - eliminate it, along with the rest of GWB's presidential legacy. Roll us all the way back to fucking Eisenhower at this point.
Really the majority of the DHS' duties should be handed over to the DOJ, and the rest done away with entirely.
It really worries me just how many ICEIS members end up in the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
border patrol, customs enforcement, and criminal investigation should be their own agency with immigration being put under the doj and moved out of the holyfuckingshitpit that is our executive run immigration court system.
Republicans are fine with overlapping vague agencies and muddying separation of branches when it benefits them.
