The fact that he feels he can say this and stand by it and not apologise says bad things about where British politics is going, it's very Trumpian However the pushback has been pretty severe. It's looking like some number of moderate Tory MPs will leave the party if Boris ever becomes leader, Dominic Grieve has already said he will leave if that happens. Pretty sure a few MPs have said they will leave if Rees-Mogg gets in as well

In a Daily Telegraph article, he said full-face veils should not be banned, but it was "absolutely ridiculous" women chose to "go around looking like letter boxes". He also compared them to looking like "bank robbers" Idk, I've honestly seen much worse comments than this. Letterbox isn't even really much of an insult. He's essentially just saying that he doesn't get why people would wear it. He doesn't even want it banned, which places like France have already done. The reaction seems a bit overblown imo

High ranking members of a political party throwing out derogatory remarks about people's religious dress is kind of a big deal. Yes, in the article he says he doesn't want it banned, so what was the point of the article other than to insult people and show his supporters that it's ok to act this way. He presents no solution or alternative viewpoint. Its a very clear move that he's positioning himself as a British Trump, considering he's recently had meetings with Steve Bannon I'd say its incredibly likely, and part of that is degrading the standard of conversation in this country to the level of childish baseless insults and mud throwing that is so prevalent in American politics.

Yeah true, the comment itself was pretty pointless. He's gotta step up his game if he wants to be a British Trump though. He's got the looks down, but his comments are too moderate still to even compare. Signs of weakness. Sad!

I think that the closer he gets to parroting Trump, the less support he'll have. Trump is so reviled in the UK that not even Johnson's lovable oaf act can lift his reputation. People are more likely to realise they're the same breed of idiot, like with Farage.
