When I first discovered this game on Youtube, I thought to myself. That looks like a fun game. Watched a few videos & read up on the game. I thought, I will take the plunge & showed some friends & family members, including my own son's. We we're hooked.
Anyways, cut a long story short. I set up a private server hosted on a server system from home & there's around 40+ of us all together who connect to play for fun, pretty much like you would expect on public servers. But we went a little further. We designed some buildings like mazes & so forth. Battle arena's & so on for fun. Then we learned that Rust updates & forces people to wipe everything. This really pissed us all of. Because that part of the game wasn't highlighted at all. After looking into it more, we learned that Rust issue's big updates to force server wipes. This is not what we want from the game nor enjoy being dictate to by the devs on how to play the game. Surely, it should be our choice if we want to update the game & wipe the servers. Official servers or modded public servers sure, but not private servers.
Now, I'm a software/hardware Engineer & I'm tempted to crack the software so it doesn't update & connects to my server without interference. But seeing as we've all paid for the game already. I don't see why we should.
So, I would like to ask. Is there a way to stop Rust from updating or work with our server that doesn't update? Because we've all come to an agreement. We ain't bothering with the game anymore nor recommending it to widen our group of players if we cannot run our own server for private game play, without having the devs force a wipe, for what the call. For the good of the game. Which I don't think it is. Because it should be up to the players what enjoyment they get out of it, not the dev's.
get your whole group to stop rust from udating in steam and dont update your server. is the only way i know. you will be left behind the main game as far as new content and any bug fixes. plus if any of your group update they will not be able to roll back the client.
How do you stop Rust from updating? I've been trying to figure that bit out myself & I can't see anything to disable updates. Unless there's a file to remove from the Rust directory that stops it updating.
How to stop auto
You cant play games in steam if they're not updated & when you disable to auto update feature like you have said. The moment you run the game, it runs steam as well & it updates the game before your able to play it.
Cant play an out of date steam game!
It's tricky but probably workable. You need to run the game by a direct command line and not via the Steam UI - the awkward part I have not yet solved is the correct format of the parameter to pass the server address, but the whole thing could then be set as a windows shortcut/link to start the game and connect.
I already determined you can bypass the screen setting dialog, and the server address must also be passed by steam, but the easy anti-cheat seems to obfuscate the command line...
...steamapps\common\Rust>rust -screen-width 1800 -screen-height 900 -screen-quality Beautiful
By starting the game not via the Steam UI and setting it to not auto-update, it should be fine, but probably advisable to keep backups to be able to restore the older version in case of accidental update.
It is not workable and it is intended for progression to never halt. Remember, we are in Beta. Things are still being added and tweaked, let it ride...
With that said, with the SDK being added , it is possible now (more than ever) to go in and basically create what you want. No,this is not easy and it will take a long time to perfect as it itself is still in it's infancy stages.
However, this is a great start to being able to create your own world, your own maps customized with what ever peripheral (in game) you do or do not want.
I'm a software/hardware engineer & I can so easily crack the server & the client so they don't update & I can connect to my own private server without any forced wipes by updates. I can then pick & choose when to update & not facepunch. But, I don't think I should have to, especially since I paid good money & all my group for this game to play on our own.
