https://variety.com/2018/film/news/whats-next-for-the-spider-man-universe-after-venom-exclusive-1202900203/ It’s unlikely that “Venom” will be the first R-rated Sony Marvel movie. Trailers for the film, which recently underwent reshoots in Los Angeles after shooting in Georgia, emphasized the horror movie elements, showing the title character as he’s about to bite a person’s head off. But some members of Sony’s brain trust believe that the film should push the very limits of PG-13 without crossing over into a higher rating. The feeling is that will give the studio greater leeway for future installments that will feature Spider-Man, something “Venom” does not do. Any Spider-Man movie will carry a PG-13 rating because the wall-crawler is more family friendly, and if “Venom” is too dark and gory, it might preclude other film match-ups, not just with Peter Parker’s alter-ego, but also with other members of the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Venom is one of the darker characters in the comics, but Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer are working to inject humor into the story of a journalist whose body and mind are taken over by an alien entity. annnnnd there's goes my interest. what absolute pussies. I'll wait for the inevitable R-Rated directors cut on DVD, assuming this film doesn't turn out to be a train-wreck. Which it very likely will be if they're changing their mind on the rating this fucking late into development lol.
yeah but that line of reasoning is a bit too much for Sony's brain-less brain trust. boy I sure can't wait for this film to bomb and Sony to blame anything and everything except their own dumb-asses.
aw shit
It's pretty insane how movie sequels these days, especially comic book movies, are planned out far in advance of even their original movie being released. They want to make this one PG-13 because MAYBE in the future there will be a team up that will require a pg-13 rating? Just do what was originally planned and see how it does before you go worrying about how that will affect any sequels or spinoffs. Especially when it seems the obvious answer is to let this one be rated R when it's a Venom solo movie and if you have to cut back on the gore and violence in a team up so what. Let that director worry about that.
I still don't get this mentality. Logan is honestly the greatest superhero film I've seen by far, and it was super popular, as was Deadpool.
sony is amazing at destroying their own movies chances
Getting cold feet is what killed The Wolverine. Fox already did the legwork for you, Sony, R-rated films involving superheroes work, but you have put the effort in.
Any chance of this movie being successful has rolled away like a turd in the wind.
Everyone involved in logan took a giant pay cut.
How many more times can thry shoot themselves in the foot with this movie?
Sony: "Marvel! Look at this Venom film I made!" Marvel: "That's real cute, kid, now go back and play with Warner Bros. while we work on Phase Four and Five of the MCU." Sony: "Thank you, Marvel, one day I'm going to be just like you!" Marvel: *Sigh* "Poor kid..."
R rated movies typically make less money than PG-13 ones, and judging by the footage, they’ve spent a pretty penny on this.
You could have had a deadpool Sony, but no you fucked up and made its success too critical and went soft.
Movie was gonna be shit anyway, now it's just worse.
Sony has a fear of successful movies.
Honestly the movie didn't look very good to begin with. Looks like a generic action film with some ~edge~. I don't think an R-rating would have saved it. I'll happily admit I'm wrong if it actually turns out at all decent.
Dont you fuck me on this, Sony, i've been waiting 11 years for this movie.
well if it's any consolation, given the current movie studio philosophy you'll probably only have to wait 3 or 4 more years for the inevitable reboot to take another stab at it.
Maaaan what the fuck, this was the first movie to finally nail Venom. What a disappointment.
Unless Disney literally has it down on a contract, blaming an R rating for not being able to do any cross overs in the future is a cop out
Sony trying to make a Spider-manless Spider-man universe is about the stupidest things I have ever heard. I wish Fox wasn't going away and Sony was.

Venom is PG-13 so he can cross over with Spider-Man at some point? What the fuck, this makes no sense.

"Hearing from studio sources the reason is so that Venom and Spider-Man can face off at some point down the line. If the movie is R, it’s hard to do that." yea beacuse it's not like Wolverine's solo movies have ever been R rated despite the team-up films being PG13 OH WAIT
This movie's going to blow like a turd in the wind.
I don't understand at all. Exactly how did bumping the film rating down let them get away with Spidey fighting the giant hell-monster? Is Spiderman's actor going to burst into flames if he somehow makes it into an R-rated movie?
To be fair, he was in the PG-13 ones first, and his only theatrically released R rated film was his final one.
if you have a villain that does R rated evil stuff like murder it is kind of hard to portray that character in another movie without them feeling de-clawed. that's what i imagine they were thinking, anyway.
