https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJjugkmglRg What the fuck? Weren't the vast majority of the hijackers Saudi nationals? Why are we allied with these fucking pricks.
Because trade deals. Trade with Saudi Arabia is so entwined with the western economy we're pretty much forced to stay allied with them. This of course results in gross stuff like the Western intervention in Yemen as the Saudi's attempt oppress the Shia's in that country.
Yeah, I'm aware that it's mostly for trade and oil reasons, but I don't think that justifies our continued 'friendship.'
money, if they didn't have it they'd be on america's list of countries that need a regime change because democracy.
That Arabic saying is shit, I don't know if they mistranslated it but I can't take it serious with that wording, "finds what doesn't please him." Ooh, that sounds so ominous, I think Canada need to have a talk about this.
Because oil.
Sounds like the mob or something.
I'm never one to discourage criticism of Trump, but I find it extremely disingenous when my government (and various others) ally themselves with the Saudis yet attack the Trump administration at every opportunity. And this inconsistancy finds its way into the public sphere, too- mass protests over Trump's visit but nothing much as an 'ehh' over the visit of a Saudi official.
Our government are total pussies when it comes to Trump, they never attack him and never will, plus I expect FAR more from the leader of the free world than a country that beheads people for being gay. Plus nobody knows when the Saudis visit. Also, Trump NEEDS to be called out and attacked. He's currently undermining American democracy and is enabling fascism across the free world, his influence on our society is MUCH greater than the Saudis, who'll never be damaged by our outrage nor swayed. Society needs to remind everyone that Trump's ugly ideology is NOT tolerated and never will be, otherwise people like Boris will continue to spring up. You think the Saudi's ideology is likely to become mainstream here if we don't constantly attack it? I get your point, the Saudis are obviously more vile than Trump, but we have more weapons in our arsenal against Trump than we do against Saudis, where we are effectively powerless as they have no free press, live under a dictatorship and quite frankly don't give a fuck about what we think. Meanwhile we have extremely strong cultural ties to the US, and if they believe one of their closest things despise their president, it's going to hurt. Also sadly, the chances of west minister fucking off from the Saudis is utterly hopeless for the time being, the Tories are in bed with them as are the Labour right, Corbyn tried to fight them on this and got screamed at. It's pretty shitty. The Saudis are responsible for FAR more Antisemitism than some lowly obscure Labour members.
https://twitter.com/EmmaMAshford/status/1026584153310019587 The speculation is that Saudi Arabia is using Canada as a relatively painless way of setting an example to other Western nations to stay out of their personal business. The actual trade between Canada and the KSA is fairly minimal. Canada ain't taking that shit. We'll buy our oil elsewhere! Though this fucks up Saudi medical students who have been welcomed into Canada to complete their education and training (before returning home to KSA) in far greater numbers than any other country on the planet. The program was paid by the Saudi government and saw Saudi students practicing in Canadian teaching clinics and hospitals at no cost to the Canadian system, with Saudi students returning home with comprehensive western-grade medical knowledge and allowing the KSA to replace its many foreign doctors with Saudi nationals. The KSA has only a few weeks to find placement for them in other countries since it's recalled them from Canada. So... gg KSA?
Its also for religious and political stability reasons. The west wants a big nation that is able to ensure some levels of stability in the middle east/North Africa region. Ironic since they've allowed extremism to grow. Plus they control Mecca, the holiest site in Islam. They could just announce a fatwa and go 'fuck everyone'
Oh saudi arabia is a fucking tinderbox. It's still a fuedal style monarchy wearing the skin of an industrialized country. All the royal family, and upper classes in mecca, dubai etc are all Wahabist (which is a branch of Quaranic literalism) Sunni muslims, while all the working class types who actually run/work the oil fields and other such jobs are mostly Shia muslims, and Sunni/Shias fucking hate each other. So Saudi Arabia right now is basically the same as the runup to the french revolution, with a good amount of 7th century religious sectarian volitility thrown in for good measure. Then throw in the fact that the majority of terrorism is Wahhabist based and almost universally has some sort of funding thread going back to SA, be it nationals or the state itself, and you're starting to get an idea of the secret life of arabia. The only reason we put up with them is because after OPEC's contribution to the oil crisis in the '70s, which crashed the economy 2008 style and caused fucking food shortages in the US, we sort of grant them their image as a sophisticated modern country, both by ignoring shit like this, and shit like granting them the chair of the human rights council at the UN. And i'm not sure if that's mutual self interest or blackmail/extortion. Wouldn't be suprised if the US conspires with the Saudi state to clamp down the inevitible Shia rebellion, if my balls were that tied up i'd probably do it too. Though i'd push heavily for electrification or external combustion production in cars as well to loosen up their one claim to influence. It may be a powerful one, but it's a damn stupid idea to put all your eggs in one basket, which SA has done with oil gatekeeping. Who knows, maybe that's what GM was up to in the '70's with their steam cars, since those don't need any refined fuel, just anything that burns, which would put oil out of the picture if need be. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/228931/5bdf7351-90aa-4a04-ae65-133a2f282148/image.png My only regret is that when the Saudi state does collapse in under it's own weight, all those beautiful cars and countless other treasures are going to be destroyed or snapped up by every two bit oppertunistic thug who can beat the rush.
Yes, but I don't think Oil is the only factor as to why the west is still supporting them.
