https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a22685301/james-bond-producers-idris-elba/ Now, new reports indicate that James Bond producers are starting to lean toward the idea of Elba taking the role. As the Independent reports: Director Antoine Fuqua revealed the details of a conversation with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, in which she said "it is time" for a non-white actor to take on the iconic role. Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who's certain the progressive move "will happen eventually", with Idris Elba a reported frontrunner for the role.
Ever since I heard rumblings about Idris a few years ago, I was fairly sure it'd be him. He's got style, charm and bluster, all things he showed on that show called Luther. I think he's perfect for the role. Just ready for everyone to complain about it, but fuck 'em.
I could dig it, if ever there was gonna be a black bond it has to be this guy.
Why not make him another Mi6 agent instead?.. Why change a character for the sake of just changing it.. then again, people (Me included) said the same when Craig stepped into the role, and that turned out fine.
Because Bond has a history of being played by different actors? Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
It would be better to make him a different character, my only concern is that they would change the character to pander to a certain group and no other reason. If race doesn't matter then why change it? on the same token if it doesnt matter then who cares if they do hire a black actor?. Its fine if they genuinely pick him for the right reasons and not just for the stir it would cause, and I think Idris is the actor to do it however it would have to be a really good film to debunk the detractors. On the plus side it would lead credence to the James Bond is a code name theory, especially if they keep Judi Dench again.
Many people have said that, as 007 is just a code name, each Bond could be genuinely a different person. I don't think it was like that in Fleming's novels, obviously, but it's a reasonable fudge to satisfy me. If you're saying that it's okay that he is played by different people as long as they aren't black, you're walking on dangerous territory, IMO. Idris turns to the camera, lights a cigar, and asserts confidently: "Once you go black, you never go back." */pol/ autism intensifies*
Then Idris Elba can be 007, but why would he be "James Bond"? I'm playing devil's advocate here, but I do support the idea of Elba in the Bond role. His voice alone makes me quiver.
You mean the shake it would cause Seriously though in the end it doesn't matter what the real reason is, whether it's just pandering for attention or not we'll never know, and there's going to be people claiming it's for the wrong reason no matter what. So I say if that's what they want to do they should just do it.
You do realise that James Bond isn't his actual name, right? It's also a code word. Otherwise, he's literally telling everybody his real name and spies generally don't do that.
Not only did her character die in Skyfall, but they also show that the name isn't an alias. It says Bond on his parents graves and the caretaker who knew him as a boy calls him James Bond. It's best if you don't think too much about it, they're sorta rebooting the series every time a new actor plays Bond, even if some of the other characters stay the same.
Wasn't this pretty well debunked in Skyfall?
James Bond is literally James Bond's name. His mother and father have the Bond name. I'm pretty sure this was covered in the Skyfall movie most recently, and it is certainly in the literature.
I must confess that I've not seen Skyfall. Last Bond movie I saw was Casino Royale. I guess I was just trying to interpret the series pragmatically, as telling people your real name as a spy makes zero sense to me.
Studios really keep shooting themselves in the foot trying to hire middle aged actors for tentpole franchises To give you some perspective, Idris is currently 45 years old, just 5 younger than Daniel Craig, who has looked increasingly like someone's dad in recent bond films. Even makeup couldn't hide it in the most recent outing. Further perspective, Craig was 38 during the filming of Casino Royale. I dont think they will go with Idris unless they really plan on getting 1 or 2 movies out of him max. I would hope they're not seriously entertaining Fuqua as a potential director, he's a hack and has lived on his training day credit in the industry ever since.
Don't assume things, then go all in on your assumptions.
To be fair though, the continuation of the Bond franchise has always been a cluster fuck. While a part of me likes the idea of "James Bond" being a code name, and the possibility of James meeting up with other past 007s to beat a super villian would be really fun, I feel like you're just supposed to pretend the dude playing bond has always been the same guy.
It was and it wasn't, it is kind of hinted that Silva was a previous Bond, for example he knew exactly where Bond would take M in the end and he knew the house back to front, I reckon Silva didnt give this away and its kind of the secret Bond missed, I reckon they may not know that they aren't really "James Bond" too like implanted memories or the like, but Silva found out after trying to off himself.
thats not what happened at all lol there are other agents working for MI6 besides 007 lol
A main plot point of Skyfall was that Bond had gotten shitty at his job thanks to being old, drunk and out of shape. Looking like someone's dad helped that greatly. Not spoilered because it's literally the first five minutes of the movie.
black don't crack
For looks sure but can Elba perform good looking stunts at his age? Especially after the latest Mission Impossible raised the bar. (Which I know Tom Cruise is old but he's proved he can pull that stuff off)
black also don't slack
I really don't want this to sound wrong. But hiring him for the sake of equality agenda is fucking cancerous when they can just hire him because he's fit for the fucking role! How hard can it be!? Why take the angle that instantly invalidates the decision instead of going with the easily observable fact that it's a fucking awesome fit!
Too bad this is never going to be a thing. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BY09DIRIgAA6Y_W.jpg
As mentioned before, Skyfall shows that James Bond is his real name, and also implies that he's supposed to be the same James Bond as Sean Connery, since he remembers the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger. James Bond has no sensible continuity, he's a time lord who's always existed since the 60 to present day. Now, while I respect Elba as an actor, I absolutely disagree with him playing Bond. Ian Flemming wrote James Bond out of nostalgia for British imperialism. He's the clean, civilized white man exploring exotic, savage locales. He's often depicted as a racist. His whiteness is even played for laughs. I mean, just watch Live and Let Die and tell me you think Elba could be substituted in that role: https://youtu.be/UdjwKKDPpUU?t=39s Same reason I don't think James Bond could ever be played by a woman, due to his character's rampant sexism and general rapeyness. James Bond is a shitty person, that's part of his characterization. If you don't want to keep that around then acknowledge that he's a shitty person (as M puts it, "a sexist misogynist dinosaur"), or just shelve him for good.
This doesn't apply to modern bond though IMO, thats the main reason i'm ok with this. He's not old bond, Daniel Craig completly switched it all up to modern times by, well, literally bringing it to the current setting. They even changed his pistol to the more modern P99 for example. Having a black Bond in this 'new' Bond series seems fine to me since its meant to be "the current year".
I don't want Idris Elba to play Bond. I think Bond should be played by a Scot, since he is meant to be Scottish. I would love to see Elba as another 00 agent though. Maybe make it a film where shit is so fucked they need two or more of their top agents on the same mission.
It was debunked as soon as George Lazenby played Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. There are too many inconsistencies been each actor's Bond series for them to be the same continuity.
See I couldn't get into Craig precisely because it felt like they removed a lot of what makes Bond... Bond. He was to brusque to be suave, he was rarely witty, he cared too much about other people to be a proper sociopath. But even in Craig's films he was being referred to as a relic. He's losing his charm, losing his skills. Like the studio is struggling with the problem that James Bond still holds a lot of star power as a franchise, but it's also constructed upon this fundamentally racist and sexist foundation. Really if you think about it, the only thing that separates James Bond movies from other contemporaries like Mission Impossible or Borne is just how much of an asshole Bond is.
