It's not based on post count, it's your activity on the fourm after the switch. When you migrated your account you got a bit of a head start for levels and coins compared to new users but not much.
There was some plan to limit certain sections by level e.g. schindler's fist, but i'm not sure if that functionality was ever actually completed.
As for what it's for, the idea behind it is that the higher the number the more of an active user you are. The old fourms fourms just had join date and post count, which doesn't really show how much you use the fourm, just how much some people post in ktt or how they joined when they were 8

Less than 2,000 posts in 12 years isn't exactly high activity. Yeah a lot of posts were permanently deleted, but you weren't always as active as you are now.

AFAIK it doesn't change above that. I think Garry was assuming it'd take a little longer for people to reach level 30+.

So for now I think it's going to follow the standard colour spectrum for the upcoming levels.

Then when we run out of colours, we could adopt something like the Steam Level system and change the small box behind the level number to something else.

Alternatively, something like the Overwatch Border system with those tacky borders

And then just make them apply on the Profile Background, or Avatar, or whatever.
Once we have more stuff to spend coins on, each time you level up you should get to choose a high-coin reward from a list of stuff like +5/10px to avatar size, new profile bg features etc. Like skill upgrades in a game.
