If someone invented a "molester-dar" that pinpointed the suspects at flawless accuracy this problem could probably be solved pretty quickly.
Institutions that foster a strong degree of trust attract people who want to use this trust for their own purposes. This is especially true for pedophiles since they are accepted nowhere. Churches, Camp Counselors, Sports Coaches, Teachers, etc. all have bad eggs that get into the system and aren't rooted out by systematic checks.
Can't say why it always seems to be the Catholic church however.
Treat the church in subject as a criminal organization and lock the fuckers up. There's literally a ton of laws already in place to have this dealt with swiftly.

There are nearly half a million Catholic priests in the US. This report lists 300 to 400 over the course of 80 years. Percentage wise, it's not a whole lot.
You just don't see a half a million news articles saying "Catholic priest did NOT molest kids yesterday".
I dont think it's right to generalise either, but according to BishopAccountability.org, 6721 priests have been accused of sexual abuse in the US between 1950 and 2016, with 18 565 underage victims. Not 300 to 400.
