Honestly, 80 words just feels too short, especially in the case of news threads, where important headlines might be cut out or omitted due to the strict 80 words limit. I can understand reducing it to prevent people from giving it long titles in fast threads, but it doesn't help in the news sections.

You mean 80 characters? I believe generally ~100 character count makes for most attractive headlines.
