True. Our roads (highways especially) are in a constant sad state due to over-loading and lack of maintenance.
GDP is the amount of goods produced. It has zero bearing on how much we are paid.

Zero bearing? I think that's a very hyperbolic statement. If we had 0 GDP, we'd get paid nothing - it does have a bearing, even though it is indeed more complex than simply dividing it up between the population.
