Usually that involves some kind of military presence, though. I don't think economic sanctions cause nearly as many issues (as long as the US actually sticks to their end of the deal, which doesn't really seem to be a given lately, unfortunately...).

Dude, it is because he is a citizen. It is pretty common practice that if a U.S citizen is taken by another country, especially a hostile one that the current admin. attempts to get said citizen back. Many presidents have done it and many will in the future.
