Why Rust Needs In-Game Moderation
I think rust generally needs a in game admins on all official servers. I mean honestly everyone who has played an official server has came through a hacker. As admins moderate on community made servers. Reports are taken into action and things are done.
All It takes is facepunch staff who love playing rust like a duo per server and see what they run into and play the game like any other player. It would help so much.
As much as people probably have posted the same thing but seriously. Could this please be a thing?
They'd need alot of admins, as there is quite a few official servers. Besides, I don't believe they even have the time/effort to be Developing the game & Moderating servers together.
Obviously the devs don't moderate their own game, it's usually done by volunteers.
The reason official servers aren't moderated however is not because devs don't have time to moderated them, but because the devs don't have time to supervise and manage the moderators. Another task they can do without.
It would be easier for the devs to optimize the game than to moderate it. The real issue is the anticheat software that is chosen and implimented by the devs. Basically there are 4 good ones out there.
Anti-Cheat software for Windows
Since the beginning, most of the game providers including Valve have been offering anti-cheat solutions. Anti-Cheat software ensures that the players don’t resort to unethical means to ensure their victory. The anti-cheat software can be integrated both on the gaming vendor side and also the user’s end. Let us take a look at some of the best anti-cheat freeware available for Windows 10,
1. Battle Eye
Battle Eye is already offering its anti-cheating protection on an exhaustive gaming catalogue. The company promises to hunt down the hackers and make hacking increasingly difficult. Battle Eye will also protect the games round the clock, 24 x 7, 365 days a week. The team behind battle-eye also promises that their gaming software will not interfere with the usual gameplay until and unless someone is caught playing foul.
Apart from the above-mentioned features, BattleEye will also ban the players globally and this ban is always better and harsher in nature as opposed to the SteamID/account ban. Apart from instantly kicking out the players the Battle Eye also offers a full Rcon administration interface to help admins keep control of their servers. Reliability also seems to be relatively high since the architecture is independent of third party network connections.
2. Punkbuster from Even Balance
Punkbuster is in the anti-cheat business from the last 15 years and they support a majority of the gaming titles. The Punkbuster employs game specific cheat research and detection alongside real-time continuous memory scanning during gameplay. The updates are done in the background and the Punkbuster also offers the administrative tools like screenshots, ban lists.
The only downside that I can see as of now is that the Punkbuster seems to be slow in adding support for the newer gaming titles. The Punkbuster on the Windows operating system requires two running services (PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB) both of which need to be installed manually.
3. VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat System)
The Steam platform from Valve is one of the most popular multiplayer gaming platforms. In fact, it was with the help of Steam that games like Counter-Strike were so popular. The Valve Anti-Cheat System bans are permanent, non-negotiable and they cannot be revoked even by the Steam Support. However, players will still be able to appeal against a certain VAC ban.
The makers of VAC clearly caution us against the use of custom skins or any game modification as it might raise the red flag. One should also be careful while playing on public computers as someone else may have installed cheat software. In most of the cases, hackers maliciously disguise cheats in order to get others banned.
4.TruPLay Anti-Cheat System in Windows 10
Microsoft included their very own TruePlay anti-cheat feature tool starting from Windows 10 v1709. They tool collect the data within games and generates alerts if something is wrong. The information is then sent to the developer and the account is banned immediately. Microsoft has already started making the API available to developers and is enabled by default for all the games on the Microsoft Store games.
Is EAC right for Rust? Who knows?
Anther issue is priority. Maybe the devs believe that AEC is good enough along with player reports to get most cheaters. Obviously it isn't. This issue is exacerbated by selling the game so cheaply that it allows hackers to easily recover from a ban. Maybe making harder to cheat is better way to spend resources than flashing, rocket assisted, auto healing work boots.....
So I hear you shouting "What's the solution?"
I don't know. If I find hackers on a server I just change servers. I steer clear of the "Official" servers. Official servers are like honey pots to hackers. And I use F7 in game to report.
Things are getting better. If you use the forum you will see more people crying about being banned" for no reason".
I agree and saw 2 players kicked from the server I play on earlier today because the "Steam checks" plugin saw that
one had game bans and the other Vac bans so it auto kicked them.
Facepunch could make the game a lot more expensive but that will punish the new players who have done nothing wrong to get the ones who have and want to buy a new account. One method is the one that Blizzard used and that was
a credit card check, So a player who got game/vac banned would be unable to use that card to purchase a new account,
When WOW first came out we wanted to buy two copies of the game for the same address and we had to prove to
them that it was for two people before they would accept the card,
I like those odds.
Been preaching this for ages. Good luck.
Maybe the problem its the EasyAntiCheat? They're the ones handling hax and from the month Rust left Beta hax's handdling has just gonne crazy.
I mean people are paying good money for this game and get good experience while playing it untill a hacker shows up to ruin everything. Players are customers and they deserve better service....I guess. What i mean is that Facepunch can employ moderators and pay them a little bit of money as a salary to keep a watch over the official servers that are stacked with players during the whole wipes. There are a lot of people in the community that are dedicated to this awesome game and would be moderators in official servers for free too.
The past 3 days I got 6 notifications about hackers getting banned. 6 hackers! On EU1 Facepunch. Imagine how much I am enjoying the game right now. The two groups around us keep bringing new steam profiles with hax and annoy us but they fight each other sometimes which is a blessing. I watch and try to see who has the best hacker between them and then comes the shattered buckshot heading towards my head and I hear about 11 headshots which almost makes me shit myself everytime it happens. How can this be a good Rust experience?
However, I should appreciate the fact that the devs are putting such hard work in making all the aspects of the game better, but I think they should take a little pause and listen to the community about the current problems and try to find a solution for them.
60 servers , One person per server for max 6 hours at a time = 240 moderators a day and so many more players crying that they have been kicked for "nothing".
Well some people crying are better than a 100 players quitting the server which happened on eu1 facepunch. This server never dies pop wise but now it is becoming bad. Im not saying that what i suggested is the answer but I mean I just wish that the devs could do something about it.
Well if they went to another server they are still playing the game. I doubt that they have stopped playing the game.
These mods dont have to issue gamebans.. Just spectate cheaters and get video and submit it to a team..
Let the team of devs or EAC issue the actual bans..
I would happily help admin official servers. Just dont see it happening any time soon
