• Would these parts be good enough for VR gaming on the Vive?

I have a Vive which is setup in my living room using my personal computer temporarily but I want a dedicated computer for it. For reference my existing personal computer specs are: CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3 @ 3.5GHz (Quad Core) RAM: 16GB DDR3 (4x 4GB) GPU: NVIDIA GTX 970 (4GB) This computer can run every VR game perfectly at 100% scale while mirroring to a 1920x1080 monitor so my aim is to get the same level of performance at minimum. The new parts which I've put together: PC Part Picker of new system: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Qb3Jgw (I can save about £20+ on a cheaper motherboard if I update the BIOS but I'd rather not go through the hassle of that) CPU: Intel i3-7350K @ 4.2GHz (Dual Core) RAM: 8GB DDR4 (2x 4GB) GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 (3GB) As the computer is going to be in the living room I picked out the Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini ITX case. Because of this obviously the rest of the build is also picked out to be mini ITX compatible to fit into the small case. It's just a dual core CPU but from what I can tell it should still run all the games just fine. Overclocking should be an option too if needed as I picked a pretty strong cooler. Would this new system be good enough for VR gaming on the Vive at 100% scaling?
the i3 might be pushing it tbh
970 is the minimal end, you're better off with a 1060, in fact, far better off
The 970 is my personal rig which runs everything in VR just fine, it had good enough performance across a ton of games I played that I would like the performance just to at least hit the performance the 970 at a minimum. In regards to choosing a better CPU do you have any recommendations? I thought a quad core wouldn't really be needed here and at £90 looks like a really good deal. Is there anything near a similar price range which would be better? From the CPU hierarchy you linked I can see the i3-7350k at 74.2 and the only similar priced CPU I can see with a score ranked decently higher is the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 however would the lower clock speed in exchange for more CPU cores actually be a good thing? Would games take advantage of the cores vs higher base clock? In regards to memory I think 8GB DDR4 should be fine, they system will only be used for VR games so I don't think any will be too crazy. Plus I looked up some benchmarks via https://www.game-debate.com/can-I-run/ which reports that 8GB should be more than enough to run all the VR games I can think of just fine.
I use the 970 and can play even more intense games at high settings, dont worry too much about that. Try to get an i5 level cpu though
Nono the 970 is already in my personal rig, I was just showing the specs from the computer I already have to show the minimum performance I want out of the new build. I'm looking to build a new mini ITX computer for my living room and the GTX 1060 is what I've picked so far.
Ok I've looked at a few other CPU options, what do you think of them? #1 - Intel i5-7500 3.4GHz (Quad Core) ~£149 Can't be overclocked but 3.4GHz base with a 3.8GHz turbo seems pretty good. Benchmarks look good and hits recommended CPU on every VR game I can find too. #2 - Intel i5-6600K 3.5GHz (Quad Core) ~£192 Overclockable with a base of 3.5GHz turbo'd to 3.9GHz. Obviously more expensive though so if the system would end up being bottlenecked by the GPU anyway then I don't want to waste money. #3 - Intel i5-7600K 3.8GHz (Quad Core) ~£199 Overclockable base of 3.8GHz, turbos to 4.2GHz. Similar to #2 for only slightly more money, same bottleneck worry as #2 too though as I would rather not waste money. #4 - AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz (Hexa Core) ~£132 Using an AMD CPU would mean I would need to change the motherboard + heatsink but that's fine if it's worth it. I'm just worried about all 6 cores being used by games as it has a lower clock speed, but does boot up to 3.6GHz Does anyone have any other CPU suggestions? I'll spend up to £200 (~$250) on the CPU but if it's going to be bottlenecked by the rest of my build then it won't be worth spending more. (The personal rig build from the OP is the performance I'm aiming for, I don't need anything crazy)
Yeah I would like to order the parts this week or next week if possible so don't want to end up waiting months for it. With the existing released parts would you recommend an AMD build over intel? Any AMD CPU suggestions?
Awesome thanks! I'm at work right now but I'll look into everything in more detail tonight including benchmarks and stuff. Only thing I'm a bit iffy about is that case, imo it looks pretty ugly which as it'll be in the living room on display it's kinda important so might look into more options. Are you also sure that i3 will be powerful enough? It's cheaper than the one I originally picked lol, I didn't expect being a quad core to matter so much over the huge clock speed difference.
@Lolkork Just had a look at everything properly now and it all seems good, thanks again for your help. For the case I've switched out the one you chose with the Thermaltake - Suppressor F1 Mini ITX Desktop Case It has the exact same supported GPU length and has room for up to 140mm for the CPU heatsink (chosen one is 125mm) The case has an included 200mm front fan but as the system will be on the living room floor and I have 2 dogs I've also added 2 cheap quiet 80mm case fans for the rear be quiet! - Pure Power 10 350W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply Updated PC Part Picker link: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/3dZ6pG I'll order the parts later tonight.
Ah cool that case is nice and the filters will help with dog hair. Thanks for your help, I'll be ordering it soon.
