Thankfully we have computers now.
Tbh a part of me is mad that this level of creativity has been snuffed out by the invention of the computer
That was quite an entertaining watch, thanks for posting it. I never realized how laborious 2d Disney animation was back then even though I knew everything was hand drawn, mad respect.
I am not sure what you mean with the whole creativity comment. If anything, computers have made things a whole heck of a lot easier to do.
The principles of a multiplane camera are essentially the same in after effects.

I met the dude that made all of these, a good portion of them were all animated in After Effects
It makes things less impressive when something that would have taken a big custom machine designed in a clever way can be done with the same computer that does everything else. Even if the end result is the same, there's just something cool about it. It's like seeing a Rube Goldberg machine that makes coffee or something, and then comparing it to a coffee maker.
I think there's something about computers that's less visceral than mechanical devices. It might be just because it's harder to understand, even if they solve a lot of problems getting their effects to work, you can't really see it like you can see this machine working and immediately understand what they did.
Of course, this is very subjective, and anyone who thinks we should stop using computers for movies is an asshole, but there's nothing wrong with missing the old techniques.
When they first showed the outcome of that technique I felt this massive amount of realisation mixed with nostalgia hit me
Like Lambeth had basically stated, Multiplane camera is essentially the baseline for everything animated films and CGI. Amazing how people came up with this stuff back then.
