nRemember when the idea that we might not get exactly what we want out of the EU meant you didn't "believe in Britain", because fervent nationalism patriotism outweighed all those experts. I really hope all the second referendum campaigns somehow manage to get us off this ride.
"Beat your chest, look at a flag, sing the anthem and above all STOP THINKING"
I'm double checking because this seems so insane:
"no-deal brexit" means you end a whole package of free trade and movement contracts
and replace them with nothing?
This is the power of ideology that gains energy via fear of the Other.
In essence, yup. Totally sever ties with no plans to retain any relationships.
Bear in mind that only a few true hardcore edgelords in government are actively calling for a no-deal, the problem being that they actually have considerable power as they're either senior Tory peers or have strong ties to Tory peers. Bob who starts his day with 3 pints of Fosters at the Wetherspoons is also calling for no-deal, but Bob isn't a politician, just an idiot. Unfortunately for us the politicians want to pander to his viewpoint because he was voting UKIP until Cameron wanted to hold the referendum.
Everyone who isn't either braindead or inbred beyond recognition knows that a no-deal Brexit is the absolute worst outcome possible, as it means we now have to sign up to the WTO rules (if we even can that is) for free trade, which is an objectively worse deal than anything the EU had going on. And then we need to start negotiating trade deals with whoever the fuck will let us sit at the table. If we want to trade with the EU again we need to get all member states to agree on the terms, which they wont as we'll no doubt send the same fucking idiots we left in charge of Brexit over there, to request everything but give nothing.
May kept trying to use the no-deal as a threat, forgetting her party is full of people who will actively benefit from us losing all the trade regulations the EU impose that ensure our workforces are treated somewhat fairly and our products aren't dangerous.
no-deal is so totally nonviable on every level i'm starting to think these negotiations are just a question of whether this government forms a deal or the next one has to
I had a feeling this was happening the moment May was shouting "NO DEAL IS BETTER THAN A BAD DEAL" in the snap election last year.
We are finished.
Yes.
And not only that, it appears to be the most likely path Brexit will end up taking.
The choice to move back home or stay in the US shouldn't be this hard. Fucking Tories.
If Tories end up restarting the Troubles they're as low as Republicans.
I thought they basically were Britain's Republicans?
Oh god oh god we're gonna be poor.
More or less. It means the UK loses EU status and has absolutely no international agreements on trade and movement with the EU at the time. This will likely be only temporary because the resultant complete disconnect will pretty much grind the UK to a halt until it's resolved. Consequently this means that when a deal eventually is negotiated, the EU will be negotiating from a position of significant strength over the UK, so it's guaranteed that any deals reached will be worse than their current status, and that the UK will suffer a major crash. No deal Brexit is basically the worst thing that could happen to the UK short of a nuclear warhead detonation.
Tories are like 90s Republicans, the modern GOP is like Tories plus UKIP plus the DUP.
Scientists baffled by politicians ability to fuck up spectacularly every time.
I'm not even entirely sure why even a nationalist would support losing that much negotiating power over such a large block such as the EU. I mean sure you're no longer subject to migration treaties, but after a "no-deal" you won't have any trade deals that work out in your countries favor like they have now. your country will be objectively worse off over a single issue.
Isn't that what your current coalition government is though?
I'm American, more like attitudes of the parties. The corporatism and detachment of Tories, the xenophobia and nationalism of UKIP, and the religiosity of the DUP.
Since the Tories haven't attempted to so much as acknowledge the problems that led to Brexit, I firmly believe that a 2nd referendum would lead us straight back to a no deal leave vote all over again.
i swear to fucking christ if indyref2 doesn't happen after this shit
Naw UKIP doesn't even have any MPs, so now power in the house of commons - apart from pressure from the braying masses of UKIP fantatics
It's literally the only hope us up north have left. It's gonna happen surely
So I guess I'm going have to live in a gorbals-like conditions for the next 10 - 20 years?
I wouldn't count on it, only the gov has the power to allow that and they've already proven they're willing to burn the country down instead of risking losing the referendum.
Turning the country into a smoking trash fire is a small price to pay for these people in the face of accepting they made a bad call.
Besides most of the Tory cabinet will just relocate to the Bahamas if things get too bad.
