I love the water, I always did, now that Rust has made going out in the water and exploring more interesting, it got me hooked. I love going out with my boat and go barrel fishing. I also tend to build small docks to keep my boats safe
While i was out in the water gathering supplies and stuff, some ideas came to mind, So i thought, why not post them here:
1 - Currently it's not worth going underwater looking for crates near / inside a shipwreck. You need 4 pieces of gear, which can not be found very easily and those are: "Wetsuit" - "Diving Tank" - "Swimming Fins" "Water Goggles". I have dedicated an entire day going back and forth, respawning and dying to campers, animals, hackers etc only to find the equipment I needed to start my underwater adventure, which in the end I did, but i did not enjoy doing all this. The pain and frustration got me.
2 - "Untie a box so it can go back to the surface" - this is a cool feature, what i do not like is wasting 10-15 seconds untying a box, it should be halved at the very least. I have to dive, look for the box, untie it, look for another box and then repeat, then finally go back to the surface only to find out 1/3 of my Diving Tank is gone from 3 boxes. Not cool
3 - Can't refill the Diving Tank, says i need a blueprint which i quote "use a workbench to refill the air tank". I go to the workbench it doesn't work, the item doesn't even want to go inside. I try to repair it in the repair bench, nothing. I try all 3 Workbench tiers, nothing. The worst part? IT'S NOT EASY TO FIND A DIVING TANK !!!! Not to mention it offers no protection at all...
4 - Dying in the water and getting the gear back. This is the most infuriating thing I've done in a while. So the story begins like this. I tried diving without an air tank ( Yes i know... very bright of me, i had never tried to go diving and never drowned, i was 24/7 on land) near those so called "Shipwrecks" only to find that i have underestimated the capacity of air in my guy's lungs. After not even 3 seconds of diving, i was gasping for air, and in 4 seconds from 100 HP i was at 0. Mind you i had every piece of equipment on except for the "Diving Tank" - I had loot on me, A LOT, including items such as guns, meds, food not to mention the materials that i gathered.... Yes, i am aware that the boat has storage
-- The fun begins just about now ladies and gentleman, grab a chair and some popcorn. I respawned at my dock that i built. I went butt-naked with my rock and torch, rushed over to my body, i knew where it was, If i find my boat, I find body and everything. I also knew that that my body managed to float to the surface. Found my boat, did not find my body. IT SANK AT THE BOTTOM !!. I looked at the time when i died and when i got back, not even 2-3 minutes have passed, thought i could get it. So i respawned.
-- Respawned at my base, got all 4 pieces of equipment needed and went back. Got to my boat then i began diving.... In that time the shipwreck disappeared, did not know it can do that... After i reached the bottom i was greeted by an absolute forest of algae and whatever grows at the bottom of the sea and near shores. Then i began looking for my stuff. 10 min and 1 empty "Diving Tank" later, nothing.... absolutely god damn nothing, i was furious, mad, i died such an idiotic death and i got punished for it, punished for being dumb.
-- You can get all kinds of stuff from the underwater boxes but that still doesn't make it worth it going trough all the trouble of getting the gear you need only to explore 2 or 3 sunken ships.
-- Why i wrote all this? So you can get an idea of what i had to experience, more details, the better the solution.
-- In my opinion, if your body or bag sinks at the bottom, IT MUST produce like a stream of bubbles, a thin line of bubbles going up, high enough so it can be seen above the algae, like the boat does when it sinks.
Or just stick it nice and simple and make the bag float as well making it an easier solution and not making you go trough all the trouble of spawning back at the base, getting the 4 pieces of equipment, running back to the water, swimming, and finding your GREEN back trough all that algae
Guess you could also change the color of the bag, make it more visible....yellow, orange, red, you name it.... you could also make it so it changes color when it detects water or deep regions
-- Reducing the amount of vegetation at the bottom should also improve FPS in certain cases and improve visibility. Want to make the bottom look nice? Who says the Island we're playing is not a tropical one? Instead of Having Icebergs you should have a 2nd choice to place the Island in a more tropical area. Change the color of the water, make it more visible, have corals etc. This should be a 2nd option to icebergs cause i haven't seen icebergs and coral yet in the same place (Unless i'm wrong about it). If you have an open mind and have imagination this brings a tremendous amount of possibilities. Another example is a coral reef, a deep zone surrounded by coral reef and in the middle a hole with a sunken submarine, ship, military ship, cargo ship etc, actually worth exploring and worth spending 1 entire "Diving Tank", Guessing you could also implement some other wildlife such as Sharks. Personally i'd look for a not so scary approach, mostly cause MOST people fear sharks and will never touch the waters in Rust ever again... Stingrays for example, docile at first but deadly unless provoked ( either getting too close or attacking it ). In action comes the harpoon, a use for it not just for underwater PVP.
5 - More weapons should be allowed to be fired underwater. I tried firing my crossbow, which i acted like i had a harpoon in my hand, i was sad that i couldn't fire it, not even my bow. Not sure about the others guns since i haven't tested. You can't fire the bow / crossbow even at the surface of the water, if those can't, the guns sure can't as well. A traditional harpoon should be added, more effective in water than on land.
Melee weapons work underwater
6 - A certain bug that I tested is the fact that your body / bag can sink trough the ocean floor and shipwrecks making it impossible getting the gear back
7 - a 3rd boat should be added, a dinghy boat. The row boat is nice and reliable, the 2nd boat that i do not know the name of and will call it Motorized Boat is nice, fast, resistant and sure as hell eat A LOT of grade fuel for a short travel distance, it is an excelent boat for a big group of players. 2 Options here, either add a dinghy boat which lands in the middle of those two or modify the fuel efficiency on the 2nd one. ( Personally I don't mind having just those 2 boats. However another boat would not hurt, it should be more rare though )
Guess this makes it all or almost everything i wanted to say. If i get more ideas i'll either edit or just straight up reply to this thread cause it's 4 AM as i writing this.
You need to use a repair bench to refill your tanks and not a workbench.
And all the rest I have to disagree with.
Water should be a dangerous place for people trying to survive from scratch.
They should remove all diving gear as it doesn't fit the SURVIVAL game where you craft stuff out of junk and its a shoddy misfiring resemblance of an item.
They should add sharks.
Floating bodies should be removed as they don't float IRL for a couple of days. Let them sink!
They should remove all boats.
They should remove all the stupid floating and sunken loot on and in the water. Don't listen to the whiners saying scrap is too hard to get with scientists and pvp robbers.
They should forget the cargo ship event.
I am not boo haring your ideas its just that Rust is about survival not thrival and as I see it all this technology they add with boats and diving gear and such just detracts from the gritty survival game it should be.
That would be a surprise

Not even close to being worth it
True, I'd never buy a plugin. I'd just develop my own.
But, it's out there for anyone who is interested.
Well, i'll go over some stuff that u said.
1 - "You need to use a repair bench to refill your tanks and not a workbench." - I specified that i couldn't repair the Diving Tank above either by a workbench or by a repair bench as i require the blueprint for it, that i don't know where u get it. What i said is still there
2 - "Water should be a dangerous place for people trying to survive from scratch." - This i agree with u, water should be a dangerous place. Wildlife would help spice things up a little, Shark are not the BEST option BECAUSE of so many Phobias about sharks that people have, people would not dare adventure into the waters even if it was WORTH it because you'd have to face your fear of sharks. A creature that is more docile and will attack unless provoked by either getting too close or attacking it would be nice, something that would NOT strike pure fear.
Want to make it more dangerous? Make it worth for people to go into the waters then. You'd have boats PVP if conflict is what u desire... not to mention underwater / surface PVP. 2nd option would be implementing AI Patrols like the APC, a small boat with 2 NPCs at the very least, so you'd have to worry about Players and AI giving you troubles.
You can't just put Sharks into the water without thinking about the consequences of your actions and how it will influence the people that live on land. It is an absolute mindless decision because it is the easiest one and it sounds the coolest.
3 - "Floating bodies should be removed as they don't float IRL for a couple of days. Let them sink!" - I said in my thread, that it took me around 2-3 min to get to my body and it sank, it maybe sank in a few seconds, or in that couple of minutes while i was running back, who knows? I do know for sure that bodies do not float for days, making what you said irrelevant.
4 - "They should remove all diving gear as it doesn't fit the SURVIVAL game where you craft stuff out of junk and its a shoddy misfiring resemblance of an item" - a "SURVIVAL" game SHOULD have more ways of acquiring stuff. You are on island, you SHOULD have means of exploring both Land and Water. You have water, you are STUCK on an island, USE the water. Not using would be a complete waste of content. What are you gonna do with all the water around the island? just look at it and stare into the horizon?
5 - "They should remove all the stupid floating and sunken loot on and in the water" - What i get from this, is that you ONLY want content that is based on the Island and not around it. I do agree with u that sunken loot is kinda stupid unless it's managed in a more attractive way to players.
I do not agree with the floating loot, you mentioned the following "you craft stuff out of junk". Sooo, Junk is Junk, it should be found both on Land and on Water. You don't think it'd make more sense to have Junk float around the island, like there is in real life? Junk ain't gonna walk itself in a barrel or to the Scrapyard on Land.
6 - "They should forget the cargo ship event." - I don't think this will be happening as they are working on it as we speak. It can either be the next thing or an absolute failure. This mostly depends on the Devs and then how our ideas influence them.
In my opinion there is a Big problem with underwater / water content and that is if it's end game thing or something you could do at the beginning to get yourself started. This needs to be decided.
Currently it is something you can do around the beginning stage and continue to prosper from it, mostly because it is the safest approach of gathering materials. It is around the middle.
It is not something you can do immediately after you start, you will need materials to repair the boat, get yourself a dock, a small base and some decent gear.
Should Scuba gear be less accessible? For example, in more militarized zones? If i were to put it, I would put it behind a blue access card. So you don't find actual modern equipment in random crates you find around the island and this will also greatly impact the Cargo Ship event.
You want to explore the Cargo Ship? you need the appropriate gear for it, no buying from Scientists or from Bandits. That is if the loot and the actual good stuff goes deep down in the water. More underwater weapons should be added also, harpoon or more working existing weapons... Crossbow for example is the best candidate, it can act as a harpoon.
The only thing I hate about the water content: Diving, untying, coming to the surface, rinse and repeat. It's hard work alone x)
With a blueprint you would be able to craft diving tanks and everyone knows that they are not craftable. To fill a diving tank you need to be next to a workbench and have it in your inventory, not put it in the workbench like you probably did. So you need to be next to a workbench, open your inventory and then click on the diving tank and it says refill.
It's a waste to take the small boxes since you only get 1 component and 5 scrap, just look for those large boxes.
If you read the item description it clearly states that you use a WORKBENCH to refill the tanks,
solution: find friends and dont be a role player at edge of the map...
