https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/21/trump-us-to-put-a-25percent-tariff-on-every-car-from-european-union.html The president has said he could impose tariffs of 20 to 25 percent on auto imports. In May, he asked the Commerce Department to examine whether such imports are threats to national security. He used a similar argument to put tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
he asked the Commerce Department to examine whether such imports are threats to national security You water-headed idiot what the fuck are you doing lmao
Yeah this'll end fine.
I feel sorry for the guy who has to get down on his hands and knees and grovel for America to be taken seriously again after guy is out of office. You could have the wisest, most amazing president in the world elected after this and Trump has fucked everything up so hard that he has to scale a ninety degree cliff face just to try to pick up the pieces, and every other world leader knows that the moment another Republican is elected everything will just go up in flames again.
If American makes made cars which rivalled the quality and tastefulness of European cars, then tariffs wouldn’t even be a point of contemplation. What happened to letting the market be free? Lmao
I think the European car market is actually really small in America. American Companies still have the largest share, with japan close behind, and Korea, Europe, and other manufacturers (which include various Americans and european companies that I couldn't be bothered to tally up to their proper categories) make up the rest: Country Share ( % ) ----------------------- America 44 Japan 39.3 Korea 6.7 Europe 7.6 Others 2.4 Total 100 Source I think that Americans don't associate the word "reliable" with European cars; I think European cars are seen as kind of "luxurious" to the middle class (BMWs are seen as for douchebags here). If you want reliability and quality you buy Japanese, not German.
When you get a party of known liars and hypocrites make promises about free markets, it’s a foregone conclusion. This. If I were any other country right now, I would not trust America at all. With every new leader, policies change dramatically. The Dem of today could be the radical GOP of tomorrow, and every promise could be potentially thrown in the trash by the next guy wanting to erase the legacy of their predecessor.
He's smart, I'll give him that. He can't rob the workingman of agency by directly stealing their cars, so he makes it harder and harder for them to get imports.
Countries are going to be a little more careful now that it has been shown that America is willing to elect people who are willing to throw all previous cooperation and agreements out the window. Sure, you had differing opinions, but previous presidents would at least work with what had been left from previous administrations in good faith from what I understand.
I posted this in a thread about Germany having a huge trade surplus because of, among other things, their cars: "Also to Donald Trump, who is probably going to be angered by this news and is working hard on lowering the USA's trade deficit: Trade surplus and deficit means nothing without context, stop ruining your country over it. Germany's surplus is not an inherently good thing, and our deficit in the UK is not an inherently bad thing. The German government even stated they were intending on lowering the surplus, but it didn't work. We import tons of shit we simply don't have the climate, resources or labor market to produce. There's nothing wrong with that. We can't suddenly wake up one day with tons of oil and a hot climate, plus we shouldn't even consider solving unemployment by forcing people to make phones for 3p an hour. Basically: our deficit is not indicative of anything wrong with our country's economy." I said this yesterday and now we get news Trump is putting a tariff on European cars. This isn't news, but this man gets his policy from each morning's episode of Fox and Friends. It's mad.
That's actually not just a US thing.
So basically expanding the chicken tax from light trucks to all cars.
Remember how Obama essentially had to apologise to everyone for the Bush presidency? The next dude's going to have to give all the other world leaders blowjobs live on stage, to match the one Trump gave Putin.
One has to wonder if they changed direction simply because of what Trump shitted out at the rally because Wilbur Ross said their auto timeline was still up in the air.
But Trump, many (most?) of the European cars you buy in the USA aren't made in Europe
Jokes on him cause I'm just gonna buy old shitbox Volvos that are already here
BMWs and Audis are for assholes who don't know what their indicators are for.
Why the fuck is this man hellbent on pissing off literally every single other country on the planet?
Same in Finland. Speeding on roads, hugging your bumper, not using turning indicators, it's the classic style of BMW / Audi drivers.
need something to distract from the manafort ruling
May i interject and offer a rural perspective on the Cunt Mobile: https://www.autocar.co.uk/sites/autocar.co.uk/files/land-rover-discovery.jpg
Great job alienating the semi wealthy suburbanites that are one of the GOP demographics even more.
Hitler drove European cars so Americans try to avoid them
Actually we imported two of them https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_770#Surviving_770s
Plenty of those in the cities as well... for some reason. I wonder what other countries in Europe this is affecting besides Germany. Do American's even buy French cars? Britain destroyed it's automotive industry decades ago so we're fine...
yep classic SUV without being useful for what its for lmao
To be honest, not even the most charming and well intented future president can fix the US/EU relationship, because in the back of our heads we'll always be considering the nutcase the US might elect during the next cycle who will happily start stabbing allies in the back again.
so what you're saying is USA financially supported Hitler?
It's a means to an end, he doesn't actually care about National Security or he'd do something about the fucking Russians. He only cares about what he thinks is a problem, and if the idea that foreign cars are bad gets lodged in his head, he'll do something about that.
Truly every day we find more things to unite us than to divide us
