Looks like its running on the same engine as the souslborne games. I hope the bosses prove to be just as challenging
From what I can see it's entirely on how many enemies you kill. Every time he killed an enemy the bottom left circle would fill up a little bit more. When he dies the full circle on the right side of that one was used up. When he died again, the other circle was used up that time and then he had no more left.
Sony fans are some strange mother fuckers.
Might have to pass on that one, it's not at all what I'm looking for in a From Soft game, personally I enjoy the stats and character creation and picking my path and skills and items of the typical Souls games, this simpler approach to having one character, and no stats doesn't appeal to me and I frankly don't care for the grappling hook, I don't find that a pre-set hooking point gives you more freedom than if there was a ramp or a ladder leading to the same point. I don't find the "breakbar" interesting because it's basically a rythm game, thus meaning we're going to encounter more of the same "ha-HA" moves that you can't really know the timing of until you get shit on enough by it that you memorize it, and the lack of weapons is kind of the nail in the coffin for me. Also the resurrection mechanic is seriously setting off all kinds of red lights in my head, I can't help but feel like it's because there's going so many seriously cheap attacks that you'll basically need to have that backed up. Maybe it's better for From to make games that are more on-rail though, since they never really were able to make a balanced souls game, so this one having no multiplayer or customization could go a long way despite all I said.
However I like the style of the game, it's far better than Bloodborne's (and DSIII) obnoxious "half the enemies are tall, lanky and have an infuriatingly high pitch screech" style IMO.
The jump. The velocity. And it looks cool as fuck.
I dunno, I guess I'm too tunnel visioned, to me I just see point A to point B with nothing different going on gameplay wise, if you know what I mean.
I'm sure I would have enjoyed it too if I didn't massively fuck my character stats up In Dark Souls with no options to reroll them.
Like the two things that ruined Dark Souls for me was the inability to reroll the character and the fact that you had to fight through the same bullshit over and over again if a boss killed you instead of instantly spawning five feet away.
Difficult is fine but tedious is not for me. The exact same shit ruined Hollow Knight for me where it was necessary to constantly perform a lot of tedious backtracking and recycling through the same areas.
This game is a dream come true. In 2015, I made a post in the bloodborne thread saying "hey, wouldn't it be great if the next bloodborne was..." and then they made the game but with swords and a grappling hook instead of your fists and different martial arts styles
For me, death being punished like that makes the bosses more exciting and rewarding when I do beat them. Also I get a sense of progress from learning better ways to get through the area before it. I think I get more frustrated when I can go straight back to the boss, just fighting the same guy and dying over and over. It's definitely a matter of opinion though.
I only really got frustrated with redoing stuff in Hollow Knight in the Colosseum of Fools and also when I had to kill the first final boss every time before I could fight the real final boss. I think it would have been better if their difficulty was similar. That first guy is a pushover compared to the other guy.
I would personally not mind that whatsoever. I would go as far as saying that I would not mind if each of my deaths insta respawned me and the boss in starting positions at full health/reset stats until I either chose to exit the room or defeated the boss, that way there is zero bullshit and exclusively your skill/boss's difficulty involved.
I don't know why, but absolutely zero character customization is a no sell for me. Especially with how bland the protagonist looks.
Not going to lie, I'd still prefer something more in the vein of Dark Souls or Bloodborne but this looks great.
That reminded me, having to wait for a short unskippable cutscene every time or a run with nothing in it is probably the most frustrating boss configuration for me. I start to hate every second I'm not fighting the boss. It's short so it becomes an interruption and not a change of pace.
While i'm way less interested in the setting, im super excited to try out this combat. Looks like they got rid of my least favorite part of DS combat, super long staggers and uncancellable animations, and are focusing even more on learning perfect timing.
Grappling hook is gonna open a ton of things level design wise but I feel we might lose a bit of that sense of discovery when playing a from soft level for the first time.
No multiplayer and saying goodbye to the dark souls world is still a bummer. There's no way the lore of this game will be as interesting to me.
I'd love character customization too but there's enough of a difference for me here compared to their Soulsborne games to not actually treat it like a Soulsborne game, so I'll just treat it as a spiritual successor to Tenchu instead
I'm actually glad this looks like it's trying to be it's own thing rather than making another "Souls but with a different setting" like Bloodborne was.
I've been wanting another Tenchu game for so long. This will do nicely. Also holy shit that axe arm looks sick.

Another source, higher quality
I don't know if it is just that the guy playing is kind of bad at it, but the combat doesn't look very fun to me.
This was one of the biggest problems with DS1, both 2 and 3 have the option to reroll. (Although I think they're both technically limited in the number of times you can do it)
so play dark souls or bloodborne then, those games already exist. not fair to expect a company to make the same game just because youre a fan of their other work.
Okay, sorry for sharing
I'm still waiting for another Armored Core, preferably in the same style as 4 and F/A. People who say "wow, bloodborne is so fast!" never knew what it was like to play these games and their blatantly cheating enemies.
I'd like to understand how the combat works, just from watching it seems like there are some strange mechanics going on that I don't get.

You will enjoy this then. Vaati actually explains the gameplay.
He also gushes about it non stop the whole time, but he does explain it in between all that.
To be honest, I didn't like the look of the combat, but once Vaati explained what is actually happening as you play it, I like it. It looks great.
