How long ago was it that China was trying to cut down on population growth with the One Child policy?
And now they're trying to encourage population growth?
Gee, I'm starting to think that maybe having the government control peoples' personal lives isn't such a swell idea after all.
Whatever the tax is it will never be enough to make people consider having a child unless it's more than raising a child to 20 and hoping they have their shit together by the time they move out. If the tax is legitimately more than raising a child then all the sudden a bunch of people can't access higher education and a brain drain ensues. These academics must be in name only to suggest such an idea.
Wait, why are they doing this now? I thought they were trying to keep their population numbers down?
Yes and it was too successful. Now nobody wants kids and they're starting to have the same problems as Japan and South Korea in terms of demographics.
Wouldn't the cost of raising a child sort of defeat the point of this?
Listen maybe I'm a skeptic here but when you're rolling over a billion people in your country it might be ok to have your population count go down a tad. I mean sure taxes are going to hurt for a bit but it sure beats the infrastructure clusterfuck that an increase in population brings when you're at a billion.
I also want to mention that the One Child Policy warped Chinese culture into one of the most misogynistic societies in the world. It seriously set attitudes back by nearly a century.
And those who are single and childless get exploited out of this whole ordeal, as nearly always.
Preventing them to get a foothold and even more discouraging dating and child making, genius.
And the Chinese favoured boys over girls, which is especially dumb since one male can quickly bring multiple babies into conception but not the other way around.
Add that to the overall global effect that the more developed a nation gets the less children they produce, and you have a perfect long term child problem.
Japan and South Korea sigh at the missing foresight.
Definitely, it's the only place in the world women kill themselves more than men.
There are now tens of millions of Chinese men who will never find a Chinese wife, as there aren't enough of them. That's why they are buying/kidnapping North Korean and Vietnamese girls.
The Chinese fucked this one up, good job.
make sure youre not doing anal for 4 years or you'll end up with a hefty bill
I've seen articles about there actually being a few million Chinese women being hidden away and not registered due to the one-child policy and social stigmas associated with having a girl. But it still results in many many permanent lonely Chinese men.

nah, they try to maintain as too much old people bad, want to avoid japanese situation
No offense to Chinese, but isnt there almost a billion and a half of them anyway?
When you have over a billion people and most of them are middle aged or up you have serious problems.
You can't skip a generation when it comes to creating new people.
this is terrible to begin with, but there are a lot of people out there who are just completely unable to have children for medical reasons, regardless of how bad some of them would want kids. kinda throws that whole demographic under the bus for things beyond their control
More young Chinese couples are joining the ranks of DINK families (Dual Income, No Kids).
How come with this okay but when I call them Chinese Huge Income, No Kids it’s racist?
The article doesn't say it, but if some1 is unable to find a partner, is he forced to pay that bill as well?
More people means more ideas, more businesses and a better life for everyone. Why on earth would you want less.
