• Can we ever get big maps again?

I used to construct my base out on the map fringe where i could get some peace and quiet. Ever since the map shrunk like a year or so ago it is hard to even get a stone axe before getting shanked. I think the map size has a lot to do with this and would love to see a server with larger map size...if this is possible.
I stopped playing after the map size got shrunkered and cannot see myself playing any more with the map sizes the way they are.
If you want your FPS to drop below zero you can.

There's this portuguese server with a huge map size, literally crazy. unfortunately almost no population, so just a big desert. Newcomers to the server mention the size of the map as the reason behind their abandonment of the server, btw it's 100% vanilla.
Well, other than the fact that it is a random server half way across the world i am interested....in fact if it was a sponsored "big map" server i would even log into it, but they don't advertise any of this at the moment.
there's some modded servers that has big map sizes
the map size should be able to grow with the population. A mapsize of 4000 is too small for 200 players. The reason most maps are 4000, is when you go above 4000 the server will show very bad performance. It's just not possible to run a large map without going under 100 fps on the console, unless you pay more than 100 euro a month for a server, and even then I doubt if it can handle it. It seems the steam-cmd just can't handle it.
The default map size went from 16 square kilometers to 9 specifically because the devs wanted more PVP conflict. If you wish for a more tranquil Rust, you're gonna have to go on community servers.
I remember when they did this, thanks for the clarification in size. The problem with a low pop community server is that there is no action at all. Even at rad towns you hardly see people. If it truly is just a performance thing then, oh well. Is what it is. Although I don't recall the game being horrible to play on the larger maps back when they had them.
They're just running a shitfest for kids then. Like their own Call of Duty.. are you sure that was their thinking?
Yes, as stated in the blog posts.
I must admit, as not just a player but a server owner I have always been fond of 5k,6k maps. Granted, as it was stated above, larger maps = computer dumps. I am almost beginning to think that Rust will never be what people hope for in optimization. I could be wrong and I hope I am. With that said, for those that have played since the beginning you are fully aware that there have been piocket's of "meta" updates that have been pretty solid all around releases. Then at other times...crap. So, what have we all done? Improvised and adapted. My point is this. With the newly add SDK editor, those brave enough to jump into the creative mode will now be able to actually regulate this issue a "little" The bulk of your file sizes lye in the asset and prefabs that are embedded into the game (Monuments,Rad Towns etc). These file sizes are huge because what you dont see is those monuments are all tied together by it's surrounding area. Roads, Signs, Wires, trash heaps, misc buildings are all linked together around that monument or town. Which is actually quite cool because I can opt to not have certain landmarks on my map. In another example. Myself, I have a special event server. I used the smallest map world size possible (again, thinking of how to get the lag down as best as possible) I loaded minimal as I could assets. But not only finding that I was cancelling out my work by building my own structures. Prefabs and assets jumped in size. At times, I had weeks where people could not play because it was so bogged down. Or it killed peoples memory and dc'd. Now...I am going in and building my own freakin world with whatever I want in the game and not having to worry about the areas I dont use...because I dont have to put it there in the editor. Most importantly, to me. I now can have a static map that exists through even a wipe without a worry having to rebuild it every single wipe. So..sorry for the long winded post but felt the need to explain. In closing, to all. I highly recommend supporting your local SDK Modders and their Maps. It very well could be the way to go in the very near future
