https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2018/8/22/17767394/gabe-newell-half-life-3-valve-dota2-ti8-skit Valve chief Gabe Newell has poked some good-natured fun at the long-running saga surrounding the (non-)release of Half-Life 3, his company’s now mythical next big game, in a skit during the Dota 2International tournament. In the video, Newell appears in a recording booth and delivers some deadpan lines for a Dota announcer pack – these are akin to custom TomTom voice packs, used to acknowledge in-game achievements like killing multiple enemies in quick succession – but he gets stuck when told to say “triple kill.”
making jokes about how you blueballed your fans hard on a series you never finished isn't a good look
I really wished I cared at this point.
By this point it's just a blank habitual jesture instead of being something actually meaningful, I am not sure if Gabe even remembers that half life even existed by this point, it's like a distant foggy memory that you have to work hard to bring up
Just a few years ago he was smithing a crowbar on an anvil. He also says "Valve Software was established in 1996 by a handful of talented people. I'm proud of how far we've come." Which might not be the best thing to say with the 20th anniversary of Half-Life coming up.
Thank you Gabe, very cool!
Well, I suppose showing dedication towards pretending that half life development exists is still KIND OF putting effort into half life as opposed to not even making jokes anymore, however it is now more of cruel mockery rather than something endearing. It would have still been cute in 2010, not fucking now.
good-natured fun This just in, The Verge has never heard of neither context nor background.
Probably not as funny as that Gmod jokes thread from a while back
Yea funny, chortle my balls Valve.
at some point they had legitimate hardships into developing a sequel to ep2 and then they just look at steam the money printer and wonder why they even head to the office every day and then all the voice actors died. the end
I really don't understand why he even considers it a joke at this point.
at this point, they've taken so fucking long that regardless of if they ever release this piece of shit, it was be so underwhelming for the wait that it took for it to come to fruition that it'll be a letdown no matter what.
Gabe legitimately loves Dota 2, he has ten thousand hours against bots and really does main Sand King.
At this point I doubt the pile of dust and bone fragments of this dead horse minds being beaten honestly, nothing really left to be gained by beating this thing anymore, pitiful to watch honestly.
Why do I have the feeling that Gabe is laughing at us, not trying to laugh with us. I legitimately think he has become corrupted by greed and doesn't give a shit about what anyone thinks. Why else would he pretty much remain radio silent outside of his Dota 2 tournament appearances? He has literally nothing to say about all of the many problems with Steam and Valve as a company. I think the very last time he ever said anything about one of their fuck-ups was after the original Skyrim paid mods fiasco. He tried to pass it off as Valve just making a mistake about how to go about things, instead of the blatant cash grab and middle finger to the Skyrim modding community it was. And when people didn't buy it, he pretty much just said "fuck this" and stopped even trying to pretend he cared. I want to believe I'm just reading into things, but the evidence just doesn't seem to be there.
that's pushing it but I do remember when valve was giving random interviews to various game sites almost weekly, forever ago.
Steam fucked them over ultra hard in terms of creative pursuits, it insidiously seduced them with comfort until it won over their artistic passion. At this point only two scenarios with it coming out seem likely. It will either get Duke Nuken Forevered or released as a good indie mod/game for something. There is a possibility that it will go down the Black Mesa route minus taking the 500 years to come out part. It would be awfully ironic if it came out relatively quickly. Or maybe we would have some fucked up comedic revelation that completing half life 3 is physically impossible because it conflicts with the wishes of extraterrestrial aliens that Valve has been trying to stay away from or some other unexpected twist as such
They voiced this themselves as a genuine concern once iirc.
They have gotten COMPLETELY corrupted by what Steam did. Valve used to be brilliant videogame pioneers who placed great creative efforts into making their creations. Apparently comfort and money gradually fucked with their heads until they literally decided to stop trying to do anything that is not effortless. It's greatly concerning to observe this happening to what used to be highly creative human beings. Very few people seem to possess a strong enough moral constitution and willpower to resist the urge of being defeated by their victory, and Gabe is unfortunately not one of them.
That has nothing to do with Valve, that's on Bethesda 100%. Valve just wanted to help them and then it backfired and now they made that whole Creation Club shtick.
They put tons of effort into Steam Input and the Wine fork, helping with Vulkan, pushing HRTF 3D Audio and VR. They don't concern themselves with mere games anymore, they do what they think will benefit all of gaming. And this is still rather insulting.
In my personal opinion doing all of that shit is still ten times easier than developing a new videogame, they are still taking the easiest most profitable way out. They are taking a route that is full of certainty and comfort instead of taking an ultra massive risk with a new ip. What could POSSIBLY fucking go wrong with something like VR or Vulkan? It's a carefully calculated financial move to save their asses no matter how much effort they are putting into it, which is still ten times easier than developing a new full fledged videogame as far as I am concerned. Nothing matches the challenge of creating a complex creative work, definitely not working on Kinect 2 Electric Boogaloo and Less retarded GPU.
I don't really think it's a situation of "they just don't care" or he's mocking everyone or anything like that, but the game still not being announced properly seems to be more to do with a mix of development problems and Valve's willingness to work on things for a long time and scrap parts of their games until they feel it's right than it just not being worked on. We know Episode 3 and Episode 4 were in development until around 2009, hints were given that it was still in development until 2011 - at which point it was announced they wouldn't release any more Episodic games - Gabe very heavily implied using the name "Richochet 2" that it was still being worked on in 2013 to the same extent as before and he outright said the problem was that they end up re-doing parts of their games (pretty much all their games had quite significant changes between reveal and launch) so they get announced before they're ready, then their work on Source 2 which would have delayed things and then in 2017 he once again outlined their approach involving changing things even late in development meaning they didn't want to announced until something was pretty much done. He's also said they do have some single-player games in development at the moment.
I think it's the exact opposite of what you are saying. Games make guaranteed money, but Valve has been investing In very risky ventures which benefit gamers. Still though, my appreciation for Valve died years ago
Mainstream appeal cashgrab games make guaranteed money, something actually unique not necessarily.
I love reading people get personally offended because a game company decided to drop a brand.
It has to do with artistic ethics in general and not even just half life specifically. The main reason why this is upsetting is because genuine art as a thing constantly gets pushed in the back shelf as soon as comfortable way of making money pops up.
I get what you are saying, but if you're going for the fans, you write a good storyline and have good gameplay, which is what Valve did pretty good up until Portal 2. I would pay for an apology from Valve that includes the visualizations of my half life fantasies or preferably blows them away. Then again, money money 💰
Never seen another company drop a brand that was still successful and then proceed to repeatedly and purposely drop references to it because they know it pisses off the fan base.
