• More than half of UK drivers support urban diesel ban

More than half of UK motorists think diesel cars should be banned from urban areas due to air pollution concerns, according to a new opinion poll. The proportion backing a ban rose to 80% when drivers were asked if diesel cars should be excluded from areas around schools and hospitals. Nearly a third said diesels should be banned from all roads. Concern about the harm caused by air pollution was high, with 70% of drivers believing that exhaust fumes in their area were damaging their health. The poll was conducted online with 2,000 people by Censuswide for Slater and Gordon, a law firm that is representing 45,000 motorists in a group-action lawsuit against Volkswagen over the emissions scandal. New government figures published on Wednesday estimated that between 28,000 and 36,000 people die early each year in the UK due to air pollution, which was declared a public health emergency by a cross-party committee of MPs in 2016. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/aug/23/ban-diesel-cars-from-cities-say-half-of-uk-drivers-in-poll
Aren't diesel's better for the environment on long journeys? If so, I can only imagine their usage would remain for truckers and certain governmental vehicles until batteries are so good it's more economical to switch.
I've heard the deal with diesels oversimplified to "Diesels are better for carbon footprint but worse for air quality," is that accurate at all?
It's accurate as a direct comparasion but now you can get hybrid petrols that match or exceed diesel efficiency as well. Diesel engines have a higher compression ratio so you get higher MPG, however diesel also has a higher carbon content per gallon.
Diesels are toxic to humans, nox is a carcinogen and the particulates get stuck in the lungs.
Diesel pollution is a meme the "pollution scandal" is literally because the EU is extremely anal about less than 1% mistakes (they have nothing better to do)
lol
In urban areas the impact of diesels is more immediate though, so at the very least they should be phased out from urban areas ASAP.
Not sure what you are on about? Here's some 2013 statistics from London: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a9915dc372b965bcbaefe6a/t/5a9bf33d0d9297b12569ea6d/1520170112073/LAEI
