Why is the page freaking out? https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/222717/8863b8b3-4a0f-44e1-b8b7-634b800a68d2/2018-08-24 21-59-32.webm
Welp, looks like we're having an earthquake
Clearly the raw rippling power of two F35's is too much for the page to take.

thanks for ordering a bunch of these dumbfuck government ...
not all that shocking, esp considering its something lockheed is actively working on. its kinda stunning if you think about it though, consumer airliners have passive lightning protection by passing the lightning below it via rods; they're completely static so they dont need to be deployed or anything. pretty powerful stuff. that being said, its kinda baffling that a single spark from a storm can cause it to explode due to the fuel tank
You think that's bad on your end, I have a 144Hz monitor and OH BOY IS IT EVER VIBRATING AT 144 FPS
seems like the article is conflating a few known issues with one regional one. While sitting parked they want to put up lightning rods around them because the aircraft has too much composite in it, then there's a fuel tank inerting problem that is still a problem 10 years after discovered that could be dangerous for more than just a lightning strike, then the onboard systems are not fully hardened to survive a lightning strike by themselves, another one you'd think would be fixed by now.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL GO UNDER YOUR DESK, PLACE YOU HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD, AND WAIT FOR THE ALL CLEAR SIGNAL
F-35s have already been cleared to fly in lightning storms, this is just MCAS Iwakuni wishing to procure lightning rods so that the aircraft which don't have hard shelters at that base don't get potentially damaged whilst they're on the ground

You mean like every jet ever?
Pretty much every modern aircraft is protected from lightning, even the tiny Cessna 172s I'm doing flight training in can take a lightning strike and still be flying. This is just for protection on the ground where lightning may ignite the fumes in the fuel tanks.

This thread would be infinitely funnier if we had the zing rating still.
I like to think some crazed banana republic dictator tried to buy a couple of these to go Don Quixote on some thunderclouds and now wants his money back because of "false advertising".
im glad it's not just me but i feel like i'm having a stroke
No no no no no. ACDC should only be brought up to talk shit on on nothing else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk6wLZN4X74
It's protected in the air, not on the ground.
Seems there is a magic height for an embedded news article where it freaks out if it should have the scroll bar or not... (which changes the height back and forth.) Amazing.
How fucking many Jet Fighters are going to fly above and over this thread jesus fucking christ!?
