• Visceral nearly finished a game where you played as a heroic Jack the Ripper

It's Polygon, so here's a cached version. https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:tFFimr1MIFEJ:https://www.polygon.com/2018/8/24/17770668/jack-the-ripper-visceral-games-electronic-arts-canceled+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us Seriously, wtf were they thinking? A game were Jack the Ripper is actually the hero and killing women because they're vampires in disguise? You were going to fucking recreate the real life crime scenes. How did they get to 95 percent completion before someone stepped in and said "hey,' there's no way this is going to go over well."
I'd play it.
Can't see why it wouldn't be well received. Folks ate up Dexter like it was candied crack and both Thief and Dishonored were very popular.
Genuinely sounds like it would've been a really fun game.
Because the protagonist and stories are all fictional. Jack the Ripper is a real person who really murdered a bunch of innocent women. It's like making a game where you play as a heroic Zodiac killer or Andre the Butcher.
Probably because it was a real life dude with real settings in the game, it'd be like if they made a 9/11 game where the terrorists where the heroes because the twin tours are full of secret werwolves and mummies. Personally i'm on the fence, it's long enough ago that no one would really give a shit, but it's still kind of weird to make a game that's based on true events but the roles are reversed.
Then surely the best thing to have done was to just... file the numbers off it? If they were that deep into it, surely they could have just... changed the setting around a bit? An alternative victorian London, Jack the Ripper nowhere to be seen.
I think you're attributing way, WAY more weight to the "based on a true story" part of the plot than you really should be. Shadow Hearts portrayed the Tsarist Romanovs as unambiguously good people and Rasputin as an evil demon-worshipping warlock, and that conflict had both a much larger and much more recent impact than Jack The Ripper, who I need not remind you is the most written-about serial killer in human history.
I think at the very least, recreating the actual crime scenes in-game, and modeling all the vampires on the real victims, would have cause some controversy. Plus, I mean, you're playing as a serial killer, and as Manhunt and Hatred have proven, that alone is bound to garner headlines.
That sounds fucking awesome and I want to play it so bad
The amount of literature and movies already including different spins on Jack the Ripper are immense, some hugely enjoyable. Not allowing writers to play around with notions of serial killers and tragic events that happened in the past would instantly discredit most of our established media. Basing Fiction on real life happenings no matter how tasteless is fine, all you have to do is accept it's not meant to represent history accurately. It's fiction, not fact.
Sounds rad as fuck.
I really can't believe that no one at the studio that made dead space could come up with anything better than this.
This sounds fucking awesome. I love Victorian era games. Especially when it involves weird supernatural shit.
Honestly, if the real world ripper was attributed to an actual name, then it'd probably be tasteless. As it stands, playing as the titular illiterate butcher slaying vampires sounds incredibly awesome and I wish I could play it.
Using Jack the Ripper as a thematic piece, for a Victorian period setting, is perfectly understandable, but replicating the crime scenes and victims and making the victims the fucking enemy is just shockingly stupid.
Just wait another 20 years and we'll be killing demons as the Zodiac Killer.
Trump will be portrayed as a hero. What a time to be alive.
Doesn't sound too far off with the Twin Towers, though being of Vampires sounds like it'd be more accurate I reckon.
On one hand it is in rather bad taste, but it clearly isn't serious and shouldn't be taken seriously, so I don't see why it matters. Maybe just change all the victims names, don't use the real crime scenes and change things around a bit, making it clear it takes place in an alternate reality, and no one but the most profusely bleeding heart will give a damn.
I mean is this really any worse than the kind of stuff Assassins Creed did?
I mean not like they could of just rewritten the game if they wanted to.
We're in a day and age where a loli dressed like a stripper as an interpretation of Jack the Ripper is a fan favorite in a japanese multimedia franchise. It might be controversial in the EU, but it wouldn't be that big a deal otherwise at this point, especially given how long ago it occurred and the fact that Visceral's game was approaching it in a fictional way rather than, you know, murdering women as far as we can assume from the info.
wait what I need a name on this loli
Just look up Jack the Ripper with the Fate franchise.
Or just go across the Pacific and Japan is already giving Hitler that treatment.
o its just Fate shit nvm
What kind of vampires are these where genital mutilation is required to kill them I'm just saying if they're going to keep it so accurate as to what the crime scene looked like they're going to have a hard time explaining that part of it
Two words: Vagina Dentata. Ever play Dante's Inferno?
The murders were 130 years ago and you're comparing it to making a 9/11 game lmao you serious?
