"As the code enforcement people are knocking on the door and chatting with the lady, they figured there would be five to seven dogs based on what they were smelling and seeing. And we ended up taking 60 dogs last night and another 50 to 60 still there,” Taylorsville City Attorney Tracy Cowdell said Friday. On Friday, West Valley Animal Services, Unified fire crews, Salt Lake County Heath Department representatives and officials from the city of Taylorsville continued to clean out a house where more than 100 and as many as 125 dogs had been living. West Valley Animal Services director David Moss said 68 dogs were pulled out of the house Thursday night before the operation was called off due to darkness. Another 50 or more were expected to be removed Friday. More than 100 of the dogs are Chihuahuas, while others are also smaller breeds like terriers. A couple who are believed to be in their late 70s lives in the house. Cowdell described them as "very reclusive people" who never let anyone else inside their home. One neighbor said she had never met the couple. The couple claimed they wanted to help stray dogs, but that they became overwhelmed by the number of dogs living in their home and couldn't keep up with the caretaking of animals, including the removal of feces. Officials believe the Chihuahuas were also reproducing inside the house. Moss said most of the dogs taken from the house were surprisingly in good shape and will be able to be adopted after receiving vaccinations. Some, however, were in "not so great" shape, he said. The house itself was not in great shape. It was condemned by health officials shortly after police arrived because of deplorable conditions inside. Officials wearing full hazardous materials suits could be seen going inside, checking for dangerous gases. http://img.ksl.com/slc/2679/267998/26799803.jpg http://img.ksl.com/slc/2679/267997/26799789.jpg I don't want to assume there's some age-induced mental illness, but certainly there's a point much before you have literally over a hundred dogs running around your house before you realize that you can't take care of them all. Makes you wonder how many situations like this are out there that are just never get discovered and don't end as well.
"from what we've seen the dogs are all in pretty good condition" if there is anything good to come of this story, its this.
We've had multiple senior citizen hoarder in our area. One of them was hoarding over a hundred cats and dogs in a big barn, some of which were injured. She said after she was arrested that she was buying 500 pounds of dog and cat food a day. Shit is just crazy. There seriously needs to be more research done on hoarding period, because it's becoming a minor epidemic in the 21st century.
I would be shocked if there wasn't
Catfood is expensive as hell. How can you possibly afford that?
Isn't that Friskies shit like 90 cents a can or something?
Food prices vary wildly depending what you get. It seems cheap but will add up overtime and is multiplied by how many cats you got. If you got multiple cats that can add up to like 15-20 bucks a week depending on how much you feed them. A bag of dry catfood will be about 20+ depending on how much you like to buy in bulk. Or sometimes your cat is just a picky piece of shit and decides it doesn't want to eat the can you opened so you gotta try a different one. Not to mention other expenses like litter and vet bills. Still tho, 500 pounds would be crazy. Where do you even go to get that much food.
Big box stores like Costco or Sam's club. speaking from experience of working in one, you'd only need ten fifty pound bags, Transporting it is another story.
Farm Supply
Honestly crazy but at least the dogs are in a good condition
dumbfucks.
Christ I can barely stand living with one dog, let alone 125. At least they're up for adoption now.
They had an company of dogs and didn't use them to take over the neighborhood and extort their neighbors? Oh hm. I might have a problem.
