You ok Boilrig?
you seem to be a little bit on edge as of late...
They are being embolden either way.
I mean McDonnell is just saying that there's a risk factor which I'd say is fair to acknowledge, it's pretty likely a second referendum would recreate a surge to comparatively extreme viewpoints. He also makes it clear they have not ruled it out and while it's still not something they are endorsing things could easily change depending on how the next couple of months pan out.
You fear doing something because a politically-motivated group might violently retaliate? You know what that is? It's giving in to terrorism.
Besides even if the far-right has no reason to be "emboldened" they'll make their own reasons, so we might as well just give them an actually reason if it means not throwing the country down the shitter.
I mean I just think this is relatively not much of a story. McDonnell was just mildly endorsing Gardiners concerns but doesn't suggest they wouldn't actually limit themselves based upon the concerns and Starmer who's much more important to the discussion outright dismissed the concerns.
Hey, guys, we'd better not rock the boat marked "long-term uncertainty and risk" in case there's any unrest.
No-deal Brexit is at risk of destroying the Good Friday Agreement and you're worried about unrest if you don't do it?
Tories are insane.
Is the title of Shadow Chancellor supposed to sound sinister?
The real news is that you guys have something as incredibly named as the "shadow chancellor".
The opposition has a Shadow cabinet to mirror the governments cabinet so we do get some sweet titles.
Aye, I demand we shoot ourselves in the foot as to not lose face.
You're correct to point out that it's the Shadow chancellor. Canada has a parliamentary system with a shadow cabinet but we don't talk about ours with the "shadow x" format very much. We use "opposition critic" (of x) more commonly. It always throws me off when I see Brit political news talking about shadow minister for this and shadow secretary of that. I know it's just the opposition's cabinet whatever, but it feels like they're some sort of supernatural creature.
"The shadow minister of justice has returned from conquering the armies of the cursed pseudodemon in the fetid realms below and will be able to answer press questions at 2pm this afternoon."
"A decision on Baal's proposition could not be reached due to the absence of votes from Flauros, Vassago and Crocell. Until further notice, we will look into summoning a stand-in like Berith should it be necessary."
I feel like continuing the course they're set on also risks unrest
I would practically guarantee it. There's nearly been riots several times recently, and once Brexit really bites I'd expect those to actually kick off.
I don't get this reasoning at all. He's suggesting that giving the British people a chance to stand up against the far right could somehow strengthen the far right, and seems to imply that this would somehow result in more violence than a complete economic meltdown, renewed calls for Scottish independence, and a second North Irish troubles, combined.
You don't understand! If you challenge them, you'll make them angry, and they might hit you. Let them have their way and it'll be better for everyone.
Spoiler: this is how abusive relationships work.
Maybe emboldening the far right is precisely what you want to do. Let them give you an excuse to bring the hammer down on them, so they can be taught their place.
Yup, and it's ludicrously pathetic to see that attitude coming from the government of a major world power. Ruling out a reversal referendum is laying down and dying like dogs. What ever happened to fighting on the beaches, the landing grounds, the streets, the fields, and the hills, what happened to never surrendering?
Whether you wanted to leave or stay, you need to understand that voting shouldn't have "backsies". If you don't get the outcome you want, you shouldn't go "I want a second vote". It defeats the point of having a referendum to begin with.
I mean just to make it ridiculous to make a point, let's say we vote to nuke cornwall or gas all puppy's, are we stuck locked into those decisions? Maybe people regret voting to gas puppy's but at the time of the vote they were just thinking about the money saved on dog food that could go to the NHS? Just because you decide on something doesn't mean discussion over it is ended, otherwise why ever have elections I mean we voted for someone once you can't demand another vote in a few years now can you?
This isn’t how anything works.
Why are you deluded into that false dichotomy
wait, is he implying he's appeasing the far-right by continuing to support Brexit? If he's saying NOT doing it would cause the far right to get up in arms, that implies that by therefore doing it, he is objectively appeasing them.
Get fucked.
Nobody is getting the outcome they wanted. Leave voters were promised a stronger, more sovereign Britain, instead they'll be getting a much weaker Britain that is completely beholden to the whims of future trade partners. They were promised increased spending for public services because "of all the money we'll save!" and as it turns out that any savings we make won't cover nearly enough areas that will be losing out from EU funding. They were promised a "new, GREAT Britain" who is a "titan on the world stage" but instead the rest of the world watches and laughs.
The only people who stand to gain from this are rich capitalists looking to exploit Britain's undermined position.
