Yet people are still going to claim he's made more progress with NK relations than any other president.
Dur, of course. Did you see the previous president make any deal to North Korea? The Iran Deal is shit compared to the North Korean deal. /s Which is higher for the deals? 10, or 0? Because if I remember correctly, Iran would need 10 years to make a bomb, and would have to deal with SURPRISE inspections. Compare that to no timetable North Korea, and some concessions that we gave and it's obvious who got screwed here.
They took trump for a ride
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE COINS
I'm gonna go contrary to popular opinion here and say he probably did. Just by actually going and having talks he contributed a lot more to potential progress than previous presidents, sadly it does seem to just be posturing from NK.
Except what he did was validate NK's strategy of building nukes first and then negotiating from a position of strength. He gave NK prestige and recognition for nothing in return. Trump is a shit negotiator and is eager to close deals no matter how symbolic and valueless they actually are. He values appearance over substance. Kim is playing him like a five-cent tin flute. He hasn't made any actual progress in getting NK to change and denuclearize, and he's given up a ton of US leverage. What's he going to do now? Sanction them like he did Iran? Apply trade tariffs to the nearly-zero trade between the USA and NK? Trump didn't do anything that no other President COULD have done, but he did dumb shit no other President probably WOULD have done.
Honestly? Good. I hope this administration keeps their dick out of that region - I think it can only hurt in the long run if the supreme negotiator himself is involved.
I think focusing on demilitarization is a big mistake. That dynasty is not going to compromise their security by what is essentially laying down their weapons, I know I wouldn't if I was in Kims position. The real issue with that country is the current humanitarian crisis. Instead of nukes we need to be talking about getting those people fed, which is a giant task in itself especially because the government would look terrible accepting aid from others, but it needs to happen all the same.
But it is almost all Trump actually cares about - because Nukes make someone look 'big' on the international stage and he doesn't like people hogging his spotlight.
2010 NK: "Hey Obama, come over to the negotiation table! We want money and for you to quit all those military exercises. Also dump these sanctions" Obama: "The United States and the Global community at large refuses to negotiate with a rogue state while it accelerates its nuclear program and brazenly threatens the world. The United States will not give in to threats of war" 2016 Trump: "North Korea sucks cock, fuck north korea" NK: "Fuck you we'll nuke you motherfucker" Trump: "Fuck you, you fatass fucking riceball I'm like 6'4" IRL" 2017 Trump: "I was just kidding about all that, North Korea is now a liberal utopia. They agreed to get rid of their nukes. Nobel Prize pls" NK: *Doesn't get rid of nukes* 2018 https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132997/aa9d9f6c-31e7-41e0-a950-a92dd6e07b90/untitled (1).png
Refusing to open peace talks with a nuclear armed power is one of the most irresponsible things you can do in international politics. Not that I approve of letting a doofus like Pompeo go and talk to them, because there's no need. The summit is over, tensions were de-escalated and there's no imminent threat of war. Just leave it the fuck alone.
So a nation of humanitarian atrocities that’s soon to be a nuclear power doesn’t concern you? That’s more irresponsible then standing up to them, mate.
It does concern me, which is why I was okay with the outcome of the summit because Trump very easily could've fucked it up a lot worse, and the act of meeting itself pulled us away from a hot war. But do I trust this administration to handle the crisis in general? Hell no.
I wouldn't believe that for a hot minute so long as John 'literally all problems can be solved with war' Bolton's up to bat on the matter. His proposed solution to this whole conflict was literally 'let's just blow up the entire Un Palace and everyone in it while we blow up all their missile sites and blow up their radar and bombs bombs bombs until they're nothing more than a crater with some farm people hanging out -- that'll fix the whole problem, I'm sure of it'
And now we're back to exactly where we were when all this started. https://www.thedailybeast.com/mattis-us-will-restart-military-exercises-with-south-korea?via=twitter_page
