This shit's going to cost fucking billions!!! What the fuck are we doing!!!!!!!!
Can't build the Brexmpire without our own military satellite system. We can't trust Europe anymore, and we can't trust the Americans - the only option is that we continue the delusion that we're still a super power that can go it alone, until it crashes down around us.
Continuing a series of bad decisions I guess...
I don't understand why the EU would want to lock Britain's military out of Galileo
Hey you can always trust us, we would never steer you wrong on anything especially that brexit thing, good job shooting your feet off, they're overrated and slow you down.
Insider knowledge from the sounds of it, the UK would be a competing economic power to the EU in a sort of way I guess.
I can see why and why not. You're right in that the EU is not a military union, and thus it wouldn't make sense to lock them out considering that even if they aren't economic partners, or just less close than usual, their militaries are very close. However, unless in NATO or other military treaties it is stipulated that they need to supply access to these types of systems, there is no guarantee that the EU won't pull access to restricted elements of Galileo.
Why I could see them doing this is due to the UK being unreliable in their dealings. Similar to the US in recent years, if a country is suddenly willing to go back on multi decade long treaties and agreements, it may be in the EU's best interests to keep a close eye on who has access to their more classified or dangerous technologies. Not that the UK will leak secrets or suddenly become an aggressor against the EU, but that if the UK is signaling that they wish to become more distant, they may not necessarily be relied upon in the future to come to the defense of the EU. Essentially, it isn't that the EU will pull access, but that unless there is a treaty somewhere, the UK's access is no longer guaranteed.
A good example of a treaty/alliance/construct like this would be the 5 Eyes organization (which the UK is a part of, so why not just use GPS?).
thats a fair point, now i understand
Because they're no longer a part of the EU? This question doesn't even make sense, its like asking why the US would want to lock Texas out of their satellite network if they seceded.
because imo it would make less sense to lock out someone who isn't a military enemy or a threat to the EU out of something that mutally assists everyone if they're willing to pay.
that was until Sientase pointed this out
"Not that the UK will leak secrets or suddenly become an aggressor against the EU, but that if the UK is signaling that they wish to become more distant, they may not necessarily be relied upon in the future to come to the defense of the EU"
UK to construct new continent to trade with instead of Europe. The new landmass will be built in the Atlantic ocean and be home to 500 million people by 2025
Look on the brightside, me and boilrig will make TENS OF DOLLARS because of this.
It's going to be used to track down anyone who doesn't have a TV license.
The BBC would like to apologize for this comment; We at the BBC are in fact planning to use the new British Global Positioning system to broadcast the exact time for tea to every TV licensed in Britain.
It was mentioned a couple months back with the possibility of the UK doing a collab with Australia on a satellite system, so we might get a 5 Eyes system that operates outside GPS.
In addition, the UK agreed to exactly this is March.
"The report in question, published on April 24 by Parliament's Select Committee for European Scrutiny, asked some questions that several in the UK government will find a little awkward, starting with the actual text in the nation's proposal to withdraw from the European Union, published March 19.
The text (Article 122, 7b), highlighted in green to indicate that negotiators on both sides were happy with it, made it clear the EU can exclude the UK from anything that might involve sensitive information, and the EU simply needs to issue a notification to that effect." Source
This is just another item in the long line of the UK not having its shit together for the negotiations.
I also think i remember reading that the UK was the ones pushing for the rules of no outside EU involvement in sensitive projects, but i can't find a source for that right now.
The UK invested a lot into galileo, and can still be a major security partner in Europe, denying access to me just seems to be vindictive and shortsighted on the EU`s part
Stop doing this, theres ways to be genuinely against the EU's decision for the betterment of the UK and the EU and this isn't one of them.
No one wants them removed from the Galileo program, but its looking highly likely, and with both Galileo and the chinese sat nav system being big improvements over GPS, the UK, to maintain its military stance and communications will need to build its own and I can see it bringing along allied nations to help cover its cost.
Great, more fragmentation of technological standards over political squabbles...
Brexit has shown the UK to be unreliable and that the country would rather continue to dig it's own hole rather then take a second look at this shitty deal in the making. Would you guys even continue to pay and maintain the system when the current outlook is no-deal?
Or in other words, not happening
So wait, now the costs of Brexit are being shoved into allies??
This is like Trump's wall and shouting "and Mexico will pay for it". No, we're not giving the UK money to fix a self-sustained wound. That foot was shot off by sovereign British guns and it's not the Commonwealth's problem, it's the UK's problem. They could've stayed in the EU and enjoyed access to Galileo, like many other benefits they're losing, but they apparently want otherwise and you selfishly want to see it happen.
Take off the rose-tinted glasses, the UK is going through a divorce and discovering how many things it's losing. This shit is not going to be magically fixed by the UK's friends--how can they trust that the UK won't go full retard again in five years and stab them in the back next?
Suggesting the UK is going to have its own satellite system paid for by allies because it bailed out of the EU is a level of delusion I didn't think possible.
why? all of europe already invested in Galileo, NATO will be reliant on Galileo and GPS, what other countries could they convince to fund yet another global positioning system? its been an absolute slog in the EU to get galileo off the ground with the US raising strong objections to the design and operation of the system at first that had to be overcome as well as wrangling all the funds. Again it can't be stated hard enough just how badly britain is shooting itself in the foot.
I wonder which public services will be axed to try and fulfil this pipe dream
you're fucking mental if you think Australia's current government will tell the UK to do anything but "fuck right off" if we asked them to help us build a satellite system.
You're like a perpetual motion machine of cognitive dissonance
