Hmmm I had no idea NY Comic Con was unrelated to the San Diego Comic Con, I wonder what's going to happen to them as they have an event coming this October! What are Comic Conventions going to call them selves if not Comic Cons?
Comic Conv?
Pretty sure they've been calling it "FanX" in the last few years, I work literally across from the street from the venue and it's fucking crazy every year.
I'm surprised "Comic Con" hasn't become genericised at this point.
Waiting to see what my local Indiana Comic Con changes to. Already go to Gencon instead anyways, but it's kinda stupid that SD gets away with this unless they're planning to franchise with one in at least all 50 states.
I had absolutely no idea the various Comic Cons were completely unrelated.
Just from the article it seems that the court took issue with Salt Lake advertising as Comic Con when SDCC owns the rights to Comic-Con. Things like Wizard-Con could not be as easily misconstrued as being produced by SDCC. Though it does just sound like the defense in this case was somewhat lacking.
I guess the ruling makes sense in this regard if this is what people end up thinking.
I totally agree with this ruling for the single reason that yeah, until just now I thought all the Comic-Cons were different "branches" of the same organization.
At the same time, this is why genericization laws exist. If it reaches the point where people don't even know the difference, the term is supposed to become genericized. If the company doesn't attempt to stop it BEFORE it happens, that's their own fault. They're already long past the point of people not realizing.
