Its sad that this things dead, I wish the non-fixed aiming method still existed in games because it oddly worked very well
Smod is still some good fun

I remember filling a room full of headcrabs and zombies in ravenholm with sweet bananas, squeazing those motherfuckers and nearly crashing the game.
There was nothing left. Not even blood splatters. Just scorch marks. Goddamn was this good.
The antlion controller on this was my absolute favorite

Yeah, non-fixed aiming is one of my favourite features in any game that has it. I'm torn on whether ArmA (2 and prior - In 3 it's fucking shit for some reason) did it better than the likes of Red Orchestra, True Combat, Smod and RnL - Your view doesn't move until you move your gun to the extent of its dead-zone, as opposed to the orientation of the weapon shifting as your view does. But in all cases it's great, it's not TOO difficult to fire accurately at close range, but it's still a lot more so than the way aiming traditionally works. It changes the skillset from aligning your view to the target, to aligning your weapon to the target.
SMOD tactical was my fav

Should really give it a go some day.
It really sucks what Valve did to old mods. Steampipe update back in 2013 broke everything, and often times really good albeit unsupported old mods who had like one mapper who made it all, are stuck being walls of crashes, and a general inability to play since Steampipe changed everything about the way Half Life 2 uses its files so many mods haven't adapted to it. It ruined my most favorite Half Life 2 mod, Obsidian Conflict, and while the team made some quick fixes, since the mod is entirely multiplayer it's fucking dead and won't be getting any new players for a long time. I miss OC, a lot, but it's codebase is completely fucked because the original coder used sphaghetti code that nobody has been able to figure out and without a new release which won't be happening any time soon for the aforementioned issue, it's just.... gone.
the non-fixed aiming method was honestly the greatest thing for me about smod alongside the shitload of weapons
it just felt so much more satisfying to hit sick shots without a crosshair/relying on the center of your screen, and actually being able to move your gun fluidly without even being in vr
spraying actually felt like spraying, there was no random spread bullshit (at least not noticeable), you hit where your gun was aiming
iirc there is an smod stand alone now that seems more stable
Steampipe, and the subsequent updates to Half Life are some of the dumbest I've seen. They bothh broke so many mods.
This could all be fixed with a simple op-in beta that makes everything pre-steampipe
if we're posting old SMOD videos, here's mine from TWELVE years ago

I started using Steam 9 years ago because Smod wouldn't work with the pirated version of HL2.
And what a blast it was to play this mod.
I remember the gunships in this mod being an absolute fucking pain.
It really makes me upset that, of all the SMOD expacks, CSS SCIFI is the most unstable. It was perfect at every angle, and now I can't even get it to run without it either crashing hard or one of the following things straight up refusing to work: textures, sounds, scripts, or models. At least Half-Life 2: Substance managed to replicate the same sort of feel, on top of SMODifying a ton of really popular map packs.

Here's a video I took in SMOD Redux
I think your video made me realise that I can fucking fly with the shovel
Good news is there's an SMOD Standalone mod that works as a launcher for the SMOD stuff so it's not too fucked up. Bad news is that I haven't gotten the old SMOD Tactical to work because the CS:S content never seemed to load properly at all.
It's certainly possible to get it running, but you're gonna need a lot of patience. It took me about two hours to get the counter-strike stuff working because the tool they made for extracting them didn't extract some of the materials properly. Another thing that really took a while was finding a working download of CSS SCI FI, it's really sad how there's basically one or two working links last time I checked, people relied too much in Filefront back in the day, and Moddb doesn't have it either, making both of the 'official' downloads invalids. I remember finding one, but it didn't have the patch, so it would be a lot more crash happy than originally intended.
Did SMOD ever have any form of multiplayer?
There were attempts as far as I remember but I don't think any of them ever got finished.
But FIREFIGHT: RELOADED on Steam has MP I'm pretty sure.
Tactical was better, the way the weapon aims felt really nice, rather than just, shoot at middle of screen.
I think the closest we got was SMOD: Troopers by the same guy that made that Underhell mod.
Since Half Life 2 and its expansions got physical on-disk releases, couldn't it be possible to restore those old builds and run mods off of them? I recall someone on Oldpunch used an Orange Box to make TF2's launch day build playable again.
Its possible, and getting the Half Life mods working requires WARES.
Where's the NOSTALGIA rating??????
We still postin' SMOD vids?
