RICHMOND –Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer challenging Rep. Dave Brat (R) in Virginia’s 7th Congressional district, says a conservative super PAC aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan illegally obtained sensitive personal information about her from a questionnaire she submitted to the federal government years ago while seeking security clearance.
“I write as a former civil servant and as an American, in shock and in anger, that you have tried to exploit my service to our country by exposing my most personal information in the name of politics,” Democrat Abigail Spanberger, wrote in a letter to the Congressional Leadership Fund, in which she demanded that the group destroy any copies of the form, which included her unredacted Social Security number and medical history.
CLF said it obtained a copy of the questionnaire legally — through a Freedom of Information request submitted by a GOP consultant. It provided a copy of the FOIA request and a reply from the Postal Service saying it was providing her personnel file in response. Spanberger worked as a postal inspector, job that also required security clearance, before joining the CIA.
had never occurred to me that you could FOIA the post office, unless i'm misreading? and if i understand correctly the USPS had an unredacted copy of her SF86, probably requisite to her employment and hiring. i'm assuming that the USPS was allowed to hold a clean copy simply by virtue of it being a federal institution.
guessing whoever that GOP consultant was either makes FOIA requests en masse in hope of getting lucky or knew exactly how to get this info. that's pretty situational and some shady shit. clever, though.
Fucked up of them to go after it, imo
The GOP is the Party of Anything To Win, and when they win their default position is increasingly authoritarianism because they're unwilling to adapt to changing demographics so they need to maintain control another way.
Also, peep the GOP digging up this lady's unredacted records but they aren't interested in even asking for, let alone suing which they can do at any time in the Congress they have controlled since before the election, Trump to release his tax records, not only for the traditional Presidential ritual of revealing records for transparency and dispelling conflict of interest but also in the face of justified allegations of improper financial dealings with hostile foreign entities. The GOP who seemingly can't vet their own candidates to realize they're partying with pedos, nazis, criminals, and resume-stuffers is digging up CIA officers' personal records including health records.
McCarthy would be beaming with pride. Until he heard that this is all in service of aiding the exact kind of authoritarian Commie threat he lived to fight.
I wasn't aware you could FOIA someone else's SF-86, much less an unredacted version of it.
Especially since one of the exemptions for FOIA is:
6. personnel and medical files and similar files the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy;[8]
