The president's remarks came a day after a sweeping new report from George Washington University found that there were an estimated 2,975 excess deaths on the island after Maria made landfall in September 2017. The Puerto Rican government embraced the findings as the official death toll, ranking Maria among the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history. For much of the past year, the government had formally acknowledged just 64 deaths from the hurricane, which ravaged much of the territory and destroyed critical infrastructure. The spike in mortality came as the territory dealt with widespread and lengthy power outages, a lack of access to adequate health care, water insecurity and diseases related to the crisis.

A disaster on par with 9/11 happened and the federal government barely blinked an eye. If I was Puerto Rican I don't even know whether this would push me more towards statehood or more towards independence.
If either happened I half expect Trump to order the National Guard to occupy Puerto Rico.

This face just says it all
I literally got an alert on my phone the other day about the death toll rising and I'm pretty sure hundreds, if not thousands of other people got the same alert.
What a moron.
The deaths of a lot of brown people is what Trump usually calls a good job, this is nothing out-of-character for him.
That's probably why he's saying this. If he doesn't address dissent as fake news his followers might accidentally read the story.
The death count is still continuing to climb. Even a year after it has occurred.
This is a fucking disaster.
At least trump did a nice 3 pointer with the paper towels into some kid's head.
Gods I want this administration and anyone with the power to stop, yet didn't, to suffer for everyone who will be scarred because of them.
I wouldn't blame the Puerto Ricans if they demanded independence. After this travesty, they have every right to.
I unironically believe Canada should approach them with an offer of provincehood. It would be a big investment to essentially purchase PR and its debts and wrecked infrastructure, but the long-term benefits would be more than worth it. Not only would we likely (hopefully) provide PR with a much better experience and help them rebuild and prosper, but Canada has experience with respecting ethnic minorities and cultural enclaves (just don't look into our history earlier than the 70s please). This would also give Canadians somewhere warm to go in the Winter and would effectively open up the Caribbean market much wider.
Of course, America would get mad at any moves by Canada suggesting we'd take their territory (even if it's a negotiated transfer and not ownership by right of conquest), forgetting that they're neglecting it and obviously don't care about it.

Define "fantastic job," please. If you mean that as in "I did a fantastic job being an utterly worthless incompetent fuckwit who totally bungled recovery operations like the gibbering retard I am," then sure. You could kinda spin that as "fantastic job." Otherwise though you seem to have confused the current date. Today isn't Opposite Day.
