I get that they're meant to be criminals, but literally what was the point of including it in the first place? It's not it really adds anything.

Game is called Scum, features neo-Nazi criminals, which makes sense because those people are scum. However apparently it does not make sense for scum to be in a game called Scum.
It's a game where you can brutally murder someone and shit on their corpse. Having white supremacists available for killing doesn't sound like a bad move to me.
Honestly it's not that big of a deal. It's not like they're going for historical accuracy or anything like that, but at the same time it's kinda dumb it got removed. Not a big deal either way.
Neo-nazi tattoos and white supremacy tattoos are HUGE in prison gang culture. Hell both groups primarily operate in prison, some of the biggest gangs are neo-nazi gangs. It made sense for the game to have some tattoos like it. After all, you are in a prison colony type situation.
I'm not bothered by the removal, but I'm also not offended by seeing it. I worked in a prison and I actually dealt with some real nazi's - tattoos are not to much of a big deal unless you start looking into the meaning of them. All gangs have them, it isn't exclusive to any one race. A lot of the tattoos and meanings are pretty racial and can be disturbing. It's prison culture, people will not get that if they've never been around it or exposed to it. Gangs tend to be pretty racist and tribal to begin with - no one gang is better then the other.
I mean in a way it sorta makes sense. I imagine they did it just to not attract bad PR and rather focus their resources on development instead of that shit.
But at the same time, it makes sense that criminals and assholes have Nazi/Neo-Nazi tattoos. Hell that could've been some fun roleplay scenarios where player-made Neo-Nazi gangs can be formed. But, thanks to the internet and the simple mindness of idiots. It wouldn't surprise me if they cranked it to 11 and had legit Neo-Nazi servers and etc.

I consider killing people and then taunting hateful content.
Therefor, all deaths are no longer deaths, they are just stunned for 10 seconds. Taunting around them text,mic, or otherwise causes you to be stunned for 30 seconds.
Murdering people seems pretty hateful, better not allow any of that so guess you gotta ditch 95% of your games
What I don't get is why someone would have both Nazi and ACAB tattoos at the same time.
It's like people are relating with their video game character on a personal level rather than having a normal/healthy separation from reality and fantasy.
Kind of awful for devolver to force the developer to do this and demand they apologize. Probably soured their relationship real good there.
So let me get this right, this is a game about prisoners, and they choose not to use the tattoos of the biggest prison gangs in the US, while keeping other that have the same meanings just from other racial gangs.
