I'm having troubles making what i want with the displacement tools of hammer, basically i'm trying to make a rocky island map, with a lot of slopes, rocky peaks and other complex geological formations but every time i start to work on them, there is so much limitations and rules to follow in order to not have invalid solids that i just end up with a blocky mess that does not look like what i'm thinking about at all. So my idea is to find a good terrain sculpting software from which i could export an heightmap, i would then use this handy program : Cannonfodder's Half to export it in hammer. I could then start to properly work on parts of the map, building the final displacements around my heightmap template. So which terrain sculpting software would you advise ? searching on google will quickly show that there is a shit-ton of them, but i don't know which is the best choice. (ex : terragen, world sculptor... )
Worldmachine 2. The interface is a little archaic, but still relative intuitive, and using the Erosion node can get you realistic results pretty quickly.
Scultping terrain in hammer is pretty easy. The numbers in the tools aren't capped, so you can use the "raise to" tool with numbers like 2000 to get height variance, then use the smooth tool for good results. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/964217986225467363/2911B6D5116D93A93C8789539E5D63B2BA32482A/
Downside for me when I do this is I want higher detail displacements so I have to select a bunch to make proper terrain. This usually causes the edges to get misaligned and it's quite a hassle to fix
just group the displacements. I have 4 large groups for each of mine. Also when creating your flat area, make a block, make that a displacement, then clone that around. That way you don't have to select like, 1000 blocks to turn into displacements
Oh I love that. That isn't one of default Source textures? You created it yourself?
I made the textures using some cgtextures then tiling and coloring it.
I've tried your technique and you were right, its waaayyyyy more easier than trying to approximate the shape with a brush and then turning it into displacements. https://i.imgur.com/TpRgXj2.jpg Making cave entries will be a huge pain in the ass tho, i think i will just hide the seams with props. Also, is there a library of nice displacement textures somewhere on the internet ?
Yeah cave entrances are easiest if you block the seams with rocks and/or wooden beams. With hours of fiddling I did at one point manage to align a cave displacement perfectly with the outside mountain but by that time I had already missed the birth of my child and gave up on the rest of the project
Nem's Tools [Terrain Generator this is a pretty old but good tool for terrain generation
