Potholer is my favourite science YouTuber for sure. Started watching this earlier, although I haven't finished yet.
I'd never heard that anyone thought fixing climate change was incompatible with capitalism, what an awful position.
Capitalism can do a lot as long as the incentives are in the right place. That's a big if though, the situation in the US is pretty fucked, I don't think incentives will be right here for a long time.
Ecological sustainability and infinite growth are incompatible.
I should have elaborated, it's an awful position because we need to do something ASAP. We shouldn't do nothing when we can compromise and do something.
Compromise won't be sufficient, unfortunately. It's already too late to prevent climate change from impacting our ecosystem in significant ways. We need to drastically reduce our emissions within the next 10 years or we're fucked.
We won't achieve that through compromise. As long as ecology takes a backseat to the economy, we're headed towards global collapse.
Modern capitalism is all about short term growth and gain which is the problem, CEOs and other rich folk don't give a fuck about sustainability in the future, they're reaping the benefits now and will die before it becomes their problem.
TBH the entire US economy is build on short term growth, and its so insanely unstable
Part of the issue is that uncontrolled consumption is both the death of the planet and the ultimate goal of Capitalism.
I don't know if capitalism has an end goal as such, it's more like a tool to get somewhere.
I like the video, but what is going on with the color balance in it, its like all the images were 4bit or something
I mean all the pictures were low quality JPEGs it looks like, and it seems like Potholer tried out some shitty screen recorder on his crappy computer resulting in around 2FPS footage, but really you don't go to Potholer for the video part.
USA is sliding steadily deeper and deeper into oligarchy and the people are almost happy to support it
Incite wars because it benefits a select few
Oppose universal healthcare because it benefits a select few
Zombify the democratic process because it benefits a select few
Deny climate change because it benefits a select few
Thanks to China's and many other countries' regulations and inventions maybe we'll avoid a global collapse and succeed at mitigating the humanitarian crisis global warning will cause regardless
...But I wonder what will become of USA when their regressive politics and income inequality reach a critical point in that time of crisis, what's with their likely collapsing economy and still gigantic military budget
the end goal so far seems to be hoarding a shitton of money.
Honestly the best we can hope for if the United States doesn't turn this train around is for the rest of the world to realize what a threat we are and force us to turn it around militarily
Hopefully it never has to come to that point.
Now it all makes sense, the reason the GOP keeps funding the military with such ridiculous amounts of taxpayer money is that they want to protect their world-ending financial empire from the rest of the world should it eventually wise up.
Meh; I'll just embrace the apocalypse and eat the rich.
there is still a rational progression of this situation that could end up with us being in mad max and that would be some cool shit to watch on liiveleak with your morning coffee when you're 60
And in the case of american politicians that are making this process easier for corporations, the goal is simply to live like kings off of all the massive bribes superPAC contributions they've received. When you factor in how fucking old so much of our congressmen are, you can understand why this is such a win-win to the ones with zero scruples - they'll all be fucking dead before the worst effects of climate change begin to hit.
