Just as Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) began his opening statements, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) interrupted to ask that the hearing be adjourned to review the 42,000 pages of documents dumped late on Labor Day. We cannot possibly move forward, Mr. Chairman,” Harris pleaded. “You are out of order,” Grassley responded. The Democrats’ objections were greeted by applause from activists in the audience. Then a series of protesters stood up, yelling objections to Kavanaugh, and were removed by police one at a time. As Grassley tried to restart the process, more Democrats demanded the hearing be postponed, while Kavanaugh sat silent at the witness table. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) called the hearing a “charade and mockery of our norms.” After several more protesters yelled out, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) then chimed in. “What is the rush? What are we trying to hide?” Booker asked. Grassley said the GOP majority already read through the 42,000 documents dealing with Kavanaugh’s time as a lawyer in the George W. Bush White House and Democrats should have done the same. “That is no reason to delay the hearing,” Grassley said, adding that once the process is done, he believes Kavanaugh “will become the next associate justice of the Supreme Court.” According to Capitol Police, 22 individuals were arrested by 10:19 am – just 45 minutes into the daylong hearing. They were charged with disorderly conduct. The tally is expected to grow greatly by the end the day. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) admonished the behavior of his Democratic colleagues and said the hearing was being overrun by “mob rule.” Cornyn said he can’t take seriously Judiciary Committee Democrats’ assertions they can’t do their jobs without the documents because “every single one” of them “announced their opposition to this nominee even before today’s hearing.” By 10:47 am – more than 100 minutes into the hearing – Grassley finally got an opportunity to kick off the opening statements and his praise for Trump’s nominee. Protesters persisted, but Grassley powered through his statement above the shouts. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) criticized Democrats with 2020 presidential aspirations grandstanding on the committee. “They want that coveted TV clip. Frankly, I wish we could drop all that nonsense,” he said. As he spoke, protests continued outside the hearing room. Chants of “Stop Kavanaugh!” and “Hell No, Kavanaugh!” bellowed through the Hart Senate Office Building walls. Hatch got frustrated and apologized to the nominee for the “nonsense.” “These people are so out of line they shouldn’t be allowed in the doggone room,” Hatch said. Democrats maintained their objections to the process. Sen. Dick Dubin (D-Ill.) recalled how Republicans happily left a vacancy on the Supreme Court for months when it meant blocking President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland. He called on Kavanaugh to request a delay himself so his record can be fully vetted. “For the sake of this nation, for the sanctity of the Constitution we both honor, step up,” Durbin said. “Ask this meeting … to suspend until all the documents of your public career are there for the American people to see.” Kavanaugh did not make such a request. The last time I've heard of such resistance was Reagan's racist asshole pick Robert Bork, his failed confirmation gave us Kennedy.
Of course the GOP got to read the massive backlog but not the Democrats.
Typical GOP fuckwads being absolute abysmal scumbags. who'd'athought
They didn’t read shit. They are doing what they are told. A bunch of spineless cowards trying to forward their own agenda and stack the courts in their favor.
Being courteous to your political opponents is losing now. What's funny is that I'm sure the next Dem president will nominate a nice moderate like Merrick Garland and won't have any controversy (besides usual GOP screeching) in the confirmation.
Can't wait for the protesters to be accused of being George Soros paid protestors, as if there aren't legitimate issues to this nakedly partisan appointment.
Brett is only 53, and the average tenure of justices has increased from 15 years in the 70s to 26 now, and he even could be like Ginsburg and serve as long as they have the mental abilities. Brett could be there for 40 years.
Their defense of the document release was 'we have the same amount of resources as you and we totally read 45,000 documents over some 114,000 pages in 8 or so hours so what's your problem'.
Cornyn said he can’t take seriously Judiciary Committee Democrats’ assertions they can’t do their jobs without the documents because “every single one” of them “announced their opposition to this nominee even before today’s hearing.” Because you guys are being rushy cunts, and releasing 42,000 pages of documents on Labor Day, the day before the hearing, is being a rushy cunt. You guys cockblocked Merrick Garland for most of a year and now the top priority is ramming Kavanaugh through without delay? What's the fucking rush, cunt?
This could even partially blow up in their face since Brett has such a hardon for expanding the executive branch, if he's consistent in his views he would let the president decline to enforce statues on say, marijuana or border patrol.

Give them no quarter, Dems. Throw every ounce of their hypocrisy back in their faces and make them answer all of it if they want a hope in hell of making this appointment.
I think it's more likely they see this a losing the battle but setting themselves up to win the war, Dem senators in red states may vote for Brett to try to get control of the Senate in the 2018 or 2020 elections. It varies by state, I think voting for him helps West Virginia's Joe Manchin but hurts Indiana's Joe Donnelly.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2018/09/04/at-kavanaugh-hearing-gops-contempt-for-democracy-is-on-full-display/ Don't forget that Trump picked him to reverse Roe v Wade and neither Kavanaugh nor Republicans want to talk about abortion during the confirmation.
Why did Kennedy retire at this moment, it's complicated things so much, and Brett clerked for him like Gorsuch.
My money's on some Republican lobbyist group having made a behind-closed-doors deal with him to make his remaining years real cushy if he just steps down and lets them put in someone a little more... Orwellian.
Yeah I heard some shady stuff about it, with his son. He'd hired clerks for a whole term and everything. “The degree of hostility the 4 liberal members of the Court repeatedly displayed for First Am. protections in the last few terms persuaded Kennedy he didn’t want to wait until 2021,” he said, adding that gay rights and abortion rights are “safer” right now in the wake of a Kennedy retirement than the First Amendment would be in 2021. s
I'm just imagining more like, "C'mon, Tony ol' pal, the midterms are coming up soon and the higher-ups are hoping we can get a more malleable asset into the Supreme Court. As an insurance policy, you see, in case things go south [i.e. the Democrats win the midterms]. Gives us that final solid vote to work some magic, block some of their laws, rewrite a few others, fast-track a couple less popular plans of ours, maybe even... oh, reverse things if push comes to shove during election season? Can't use the boys in Moscow too often or the news rags get even more suspicious. Tell ya what, we'll set you up with what our insiders are saying are some primo stock options that are almost guaranteed to see some 'unexpected' growth in the next few years, and the higher-ups already have this nice gig ready and waiting for you so you can live out these sunset years in style. We're even planning some aftercare for your family once you kick it, so just leave it to us~"
Two other less reported things today, Kavanaugh pulls away and turns his back to parkland father attempting to introduce himself. https://twitter.com/andyharnik/status/1037038736155009024 and zina bash, gop loyalist seemingly flashes white power on live tv behind Kavanaugh https://twitter.com/RogueUSMint/status/1037042210347393025 i've never seen someone with their arms like that, it also doesn't bode well that she was making faces and mouthing stuff while dems were speaking
No mercy for traitors.
Just look at their tax bill. They threw in some illegible fucking writing on the front and got it in as fast as they possibly could

https://puu.sh/BpFUJ.png if this isn't a face of pure-rage, idk what the fuck is.
What a gutless worm.
Apparently Brett didn't know who the man was, but he still could have shaken his hand and not be a complete dick. Everyone should be angry with how Republicans are treating Supreme Court nominees, it's foul.
It's a bad joke. It would be funny if the consequences weren't so dire. They tie up Obama's nominee for so long it sets a new record then engage in every possible underhanded move, including withholding documents, to force their judges through
What's the context for this image
No president under federal investigation should be allowed to appoint a judge who will more than likely rule on their case, much less one who believes that sitting presidents should be immune from prosecution. Fuck Donald Trump, fuck Brett Kavanaugh, and fuck the corrupt Republicans who are willfully letting our constitutional republic crumble to ruin for the sake of achieving their own backwards agenda.
Someone needs to tell Rand Paul what Brett thinks of the executive branch. Jesus Brett makes Gorsuch look better, at least Gorsuch sided with liberals once on immigration and making phones need a warrant.
