(AP) — A Virginia man convicted of an assault against the organizer of last summer’s violent white nationalist rally during a news conference has been handed a $1 fine. Prosecutors said Jeffrey Winder could be seen on video punching Jason Kessler, who was mobbed after he attempted to hold a news conference on the day after violence erupted in Charlottesville. The Daily Progress reports Winder was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and battery for a second time during an appeal trial Tuesday. The jury could have sentenced Winder to up to 12 months of jail time and $2,500 in fines. They decided to give him a $1 fine with no jail time. The newspaper reports that a couple of jurors could be seen tearing up as their verdict was read. https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/WWXREec45JQBoPKIW6UpdnoM-MA=/fit-in/1200x9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F562560%2F357aa76b-9b6f-45b1-94b1-f260b0b4e12b.jpg https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/UXcXBKRfDLLpc15kmdq48VaeNEo=/fit-in/1200x9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F562562%2F9d2cf700-9aec-42f1-8fd0-218cb77a69f0.jpg
i wasn't aware jurors could give the sentence
Dude, this gives me a sick idea for a circus attraction. Punch a Nazi, only $1, step right up and try your luck, punch the Nazi out and win a prize, only $1 to play.
I am 100% OK with Nazi-punching. I get that being tolerant of it opens the door to witch hunts and really loose definitions of Nazism, but regardless I just don't feel the slightest bit of pity for an actual Nazi getting his teeth kicked in. Not a bit.
i can't believe the court overvalued a nazi's face by one dollar

I don't feel any sympathy for the nazi, but this will just be used as propaganda for alt right recruitment
Him being convicted and sentenced to three years would have been recruitment fodder, too.
an overcooked chicken nugget would be used for alt right propaganda at this point
Steve Bannon already works for the alt-right
I don't disagree with the verdict, I just kinda think it's a bad precedent to set by fining someone $1 for physically assaulting another person. I'd like for our societies to remain civilized.
Well, yes. The way I see this whole thing is a war on image. The alt right tries to make themselves look like a victim, and the left as a great evil threatening the west. We not give them any leeway on free propaganda. We need the general public to remember why we fought against the Nazis back in WW2
No, this is terrible. I hate people who call themselves nazis or racists, but if its ok to punch a nazi, it will be ok to punch the next degenerate. And you're right, it does "open the door to witch hunts and really loose definitions of Nazism". Punching someone who is stupid enough to believe in nazism, is only going to embolden them and their followers, and they'll feel justified in fighting back, And it furthers a cycle of violence. It does nothing to make things better. Maybe you can't convince them their ideas are terrible, but punching people who believe terrible things will lead to a worse society.
That is such an awesome couple pictures
I have no issues morally with punching nazis. Legally, I think it should be recognized as a crime as it's physical assault, and I'm glad that this particular person was both charged for punching someone, and sentenced appropriately for the heinousness act of punching a cunt who calls for genocide. All in all, a great verdict all around.
literally the most famous part of an american judicial system is "something something judged by a jury of peers".
generally the jury returns with a verdict of guilty or not guilty. Sentencing is handled by the state.
If I remember civics correctly, jurors can make recommendations for sentencing, but it’s pretty rare and usually only for special circumstances, since after all, the judge is the final authority in the matter and may have certain sentencing requirements for certain charges.
This kind of prevention only works with rationally argued problems. When the ideology is to kill or enslave everyone that isn't your race, I think we're pretty far past trying to appease their victim-complex.
So Kessler was the nazi that helped host the white power rally Kessler, who was called as a witness, said he wasn’t physically hurt, but did suffer emotional trauma. “I was attacked in front of the whole world, and then people made fun of me for it,” he said. I swear these people arent self aware, would probably fail the Turing test
Everyone should make fun of Neo-Nazi's Everyone I'm a really sensitive guy. I like long walked in the park with my friend, my dog. I love drinking soda's with buddies (No alcohol!), and in my pass time I love starting fun rallies calling for the extermination of the Jewish race.
Honestly, all questions of morality aside, this is why I believe punching Nazis is effective. Nazis have to project this image that they are strong, that they are powerful, that they want to wipe certain people out and that there's nothing that can be done to stop them. Are they good people? who cares! they are the STRONGEST and ultimately, isn't that all that really matters?. Nothing dispels that image faster than seeing one of them get biffed in the face, especially when they go on to cry about it later.
Getting punched in the face basically killed Richard Spencer's career, and organized protesting killed Milo Yian's career; also last I checked shooting about 5 million Nazis liberated most of Europe the last time.
Hell even Nazis hate Jason Kessler
Yeah okay except the problem is that your argument is essentially "It's not normally okay, but it's okay now because I'm right" Problem is when you make it acceptable "because I'm right" then who is going to become the arbiter of "I'm right" (hint: not fucking you)
When the question "is it okay to kill people because they're not my race" becomes complicated, I'll be sure to ask you for help. Until then, I'm pretty sure I have a good idea which side of the fence to be on.
I guess its okay to punch people whose opinions I oppose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XtQ1BVhcOk&t=2m34s (Embedding won't skip to 2m34s) I'll rather want the Nazi in the spotlight where I can see and laugh at them. Than having them in a hidden basement somewhere. Violence don't change peoples minds, in fact; Its self-defeating and just encourage them to go in groups.
Man, maybe you are right. Perhaps we just got ahead of ourselves. Maybe these Nazi's are actually decent folk, and just a little misunderstood.
Tough shit.
Ok, that's a whole group of nazi to fight. Where is the problem?
