Perforated organs may take painful years to recover. Not fun to be sure. He has openly praised Brazil’s military dictatorship and in the past said it should have killed more people. Bolsonaro faces trial before the Supreme Court for speech that prosecutors said incited hate and rape. I don't know the situation but he doesn't sound like a politician who'll improve his country. Despite the awfulness of this situation it might be the best outcome if this incident leads to him withdrawing from the race.
Let me tell you, I sure feel terrible about that. Whew.
Truly a waste of a good knife.
As much as I'm up for hurting Nazis, won't this just be used as ammunition to rile up the right even more? Like a work in progress martyr
Seems far past the risk of martyrdom when an already-major presidential candidate is publicly lamenting that the military dictatorship isn't violent enough. There must be a point when you defend your country instead of letting them destroy it for the sake of appeasement.
I don't get how in one of the most crime riddled nations on Earth, the would-be assassin couldn't find at the very least a pistol to actually carry out the hit. Bizarre choice of assassination weapon
Harder to conceal? Easier to get a knife?
who gives a fuck lol, they're already riling themselves up quite well on their own through their legitimately made up news. Might as well do some actual damage to the "cause" by taking out the figureheads. Their ideology cannot be allowed any outlets. Far-Right ideology at its core relies on creating boogeymen, and ultimately eliminating said boogeymen in whatever way they decide. If they want to thrive off of violence towards others, they too must face violence themselves.
Oh, and wouldn't you know it, my knife got stuck I guess that's probably bound to happen now and then But I'm afraid I may have bent the tip a little And I know that blade will never ever be quite as sharp again (quite as sharp again)
Dude you're arguing in favor of attempted assassination of a presidential candidate
Can you not think of any leaders throughout history who should've been assassinated?
he said that nowhere in his post though. Seeing the headline I can already feels this thread is going to fall into morality debates for 10 pages, but don't already take meaning from posts that isnt there.
I hate this guy, a lot, but I can't agree with this, it is not acceptable. Actually, I think this will probably help him during the elections now, so this was a very dumb move from the person that did this if his intention was to prevent his election
Cause of course, telling Nazis to fuck off and knocking some sense into them only empowers their movements. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cable_Street Oh wait, nvm it doesn't...
How popular is he compared to the other candidates prior to this? I only did some quick skimming but he was former military and he's known as a controversial figure for being a supporter of the 1964-1985 military dictatorship in Brazil, being a huge homophobe and actually wanting to commit mass sterilization of the poor. If he becomes a leader of a nation, jeez that's scary.
I wouldn’t really treat cable street as some sort of proof that “violence is the answer”. History, per usual, is far far more complex than that. Rather, mass opposition (not nessecarily violent opposition) and the fact that the facists in Britian at the time went against the grain of British politics and threw away whatever political capital they had on their own accord is what led to their defeat.
"Well i don't really have any good points to bring up, but you're American and that instantly means you're an idiot."
There's not much evidence in history showing that militant anti-fascism works. It fails a lot, actually. Look at Spain and Germany. Look at the Years of Lead in Italy, where the far-left and far-right just fed each other into escalating violence until they both discredit themselves in the eyes of the public. On the topic of left-wing political assassinations, great idea. That's totally not part of why Latin America has continually failed to maintain a democratic government. Your first sentence was correct.
You can hardly use civil war era Spain as an example of failed anti fascism given the circumstances that led to their demise. They were butting heads with two major super powers during a civil war and still managed to function for a decent amount of time.
Maybe slightly harder to conceal, but not by much.
I'm glad to see a good number of people are finally drifting from "It's okay to punch Nazis" to "It's okay to stab Nazis." That's how you really put an end to a political climate of polarization and divisive demagoguery. I'm absolutely further enthralled by the vague cloud of bullshit that qualifies people for being Nazis now. Soon we begin guilt-free purges of our political lessers, since we're only defending our countries. Top shelf stuff. It was really only 50 years ago that the American government stopped publicly shooting dangerous subversives in the face anyway. After all, they were practically trying to throw our national policy to the Russians one violent protest at a time. It's a tradition at this point. I don't even know why we stopped.
Seeing the response to this makes me absolutely certain that there won't be a peaceful resolution to the constitutional crisis in the USA.

A public assassination attempt on a political candidate is going to be a lot more impactful than several rounds of fake news. And not only just because it's going to be condemned by all political opponents who support democratic process. I could swear there was a part in the article about stock traders speculating a political boost for the far right leading to an increase in Brazilian real's value, but it's gone now.
He wasn't calling you stupid, it was a joke about American presidents getting shot which they often did rip James Garfield
The right can get riled up all it wants, they will still proceed to eat shit at any point where they meet resistance. There is no reason to fear them.
I'm increasingly convinced that violence is necessary to deal with fascism whenever it becomes mainstream enough to threaten democracy. Fascists are self victimizing in the extreme, hypocrisy and rejection of reason is intrinsic to the ideology. Fascists often cannot really be reasoned with since any disagreement confirms their cause to them.
I do think this is one of those really difficult moral dilemmas: is it worth being honourable even if it results in an evil dictatorship? Do we do one awful thing to save thousands? It's the trolley problem in a nutshell. I've always been somebody who says that I would pull the lever to save 5 instead of 1, as it's just simple mathematics, but I can understand opposing arguments too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvzCq41fi_M
Every time these people take control of a country, something terrible happens. There is no room for error.
