The president of Germany's domestic intelligence agency, Hans-Georg Maassen, has expressed doubts about reports that right-wing extremists were chasing down non-Germans during demonstrations in Chemnitz, Bild newspaper reported Friday.
In reference to a video that has been widely shared online showing far-right protesters chasing after people who looked non-German, Maassen said: "There is no evidence to suggest that the video of this alleged incident circulating online is authentic."
Maassen told Bild that his Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) had "no reliable information that such pursuits had taken place."
"There is good reason to believe that this is deliberate misinformation, possibly to distract the public from the murder in Chemnitz," Maassen added.
Maassen has recently come under fire for unexplained meetings with members of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. A book by a former AfD member has even alleged that during one such meeting, with former AfD chairwoman Frauke Petry, Maassen gave tips for avoiding monitoring by the BfV.
The highlighted sentence makes this seem pretty suspicious, but then again he's the intelligence chief... that however isn't an excuse if he truly is biased.
Chemnitz is in the East of Germany where the AfD are very strong and politics tend to be much further right and authoritarian due to Soviet influence back in the day. People tend to think of Soviet Russia as very left wing, but it was arguably very right wing on social issues.
womens rights are right wing? The soviets were def authoritarian but the whole idea of marxism is tied to internationalism and united humanity, not exactly right wing.
There's a mix. They're still what I'd consider a left-wing ideology overall, but they had a lot of right-wing social principles.
"No evidence" except the videos... Yeah this guy looks awfully sketchy.
In the UK especially a lot of suffragettes went on to join Fascist organisations, for example the first example of a Fascist Organisation in the UK (The British Fascists) was founded by a woman. - Source for first claim is from Jessica Mitford's Autobiography

Woah, founded by a woman? Gee I guess feminists are the real Nazis.
Or in European countries especially both the left and right wing have been intertwined with Women's suffrage, especially in the 1920s/30s. But good attempt at a zinger mate.
this is a very narrow view of communism and what was put into practice in the Soviet Union.
