This is nothing new, conservatives have had very selective memory for at least as long as I've been alive.
In a way, "compassionate conservative" is pretty much the label you could give to anti-progressive and moderate democrats like Hillary Clinton and a lot of the democratic establishment.
In 2020 we're gonna have GOP members whose stated policy is "Give us money and then we kill you" and we'll still have fence sitters, cause apparently there's no low the GOP will stop tomorrow and no final straw for Republican voters
