'Battlefield V' Censors Words Like 'Nazi' 'Titanfall' And 'White..
But don’t ban “lag” or “white man” or any of these other words. It’s possible the filter is simply too aggressive at this point and will be dialed back for the main release, but at the moment…it’snuts (another banned word) and impossible to defend (another banned word) on any rational basis.
Oh, and another thing: Will game developers please stop sugar-coating World War 2? Nazis were part of that. Swastikas and other Nazi regalia were very real. Movies haven’t shrunk from portrayals of Nazi Germany and the Third Reich’s deep attachment to symbolism. Why are video game developers so cowardly about it? Between this and Call Of Duty: WWII we’ve all but erased Nazis from the war they started.
At least there was a brief moment in the WWII campaign that dealt with the Holocaust, so I have to tip my hat to Sledgehammer Games for that. But the erasure of Nazi regalia and symbolism white-washes a war that involved truly atrocious crimes against humanity and while I do understand that these are just games, I’m still not a fan of the phrase “just games.”
Jesus, DICE, what are you doing?
As a white man, I feel like the Nazi-like attitude of EA to be worse than their DLC or the way they lag behind current trends. I'll never forgive them for Titanfall. GG.
the writer brings up some very good points here.
It's even worse than Dark Souls' name filter
K***ht T**mas
...but, why Titanfall?
damn it was worth taking a 1 month delay to put in a word filter
Because they knowingly and willingly bought Titanfall specifically to destroy the studio and series.
it was a planned anti-competition based kill
You also can't write 'DLC' but somehow it's allowed if you prelude it with 'Free'
oh my god censoring 'Nazi' And 'White Man' is one thing, but the thought of EA and DICE deliberately censoring "Titanfall" sounds like a hyperbolic shitpost
It's almost definitely not purposeful, whatever tool they are using to censor text is obviously very trigger happy. It will even censor words in other languages that seem meaningless in English.
I hope this gets reversed after the call outs.
It is only a video game but it paints a bleak picture of corporate approved speech and words only and not even things that are political.
Come off it, that does not explain titanfall, and "dlc" being censored while "free dlc" isn't.
DLC is allowed now.
I think its just an overly aggressive automatic word filter, I don't think anything malicious was meant out of it. Although, why an M rated game has a word filter is beyond me.
In my opinion, Titanfall 2 is the best multiplayer FPS of the last ten years.
May the franchise rest in peace, I guess. We probably won't be getting a third one, Respawn is working on some unannounced Star Wars game.
I like that their response is the usual "We hear your feedback don't worry" bullcrap, Battlefront 2 still ended up being a freemium garbage despite whatever feedback they got from the beta
It could just be that the blacklisted words hadn't been reviewed properly for the beta and the QAs or Devs put some extras in for jokes while they testing it. It's the sort of thing I could see being overlooked accidentally, I seriously doubt they intended to censor things like DLC and Titanfall.
I said in the BF thread I'll say it here, I once said "Battlefield" and it got censored so I got a feeling its a combination of a fucked up filter and probably a bit of malicious censorship if I had to guess
With regards to the removing Nazi imagery stuff, I feel that only happens in games where people will have to actually play as them. Same reason why they changed the multiplayer faction in that medal of honor reboot from the Taliban or Al Queda or whatever to just "Opfor". They're probably thinking it'll be easier for them in the long run to just remove any explicit Nazi imagery so people don't get their panties in a bunch because they get matched onto the Nazi team.
because it has the word 'tit' in it
I'd initially have assumed it was just some over-protective automatic filter where something like "Titanfall" might be blocked because it contains "Tit", which would still be absurd but at least there would be some sort of reasoning behind it...but that would in no way explain why "DLC" or "Defend" or "lag" aren't allowed, yet "Free DLC" supposedly is.
To be honest, not even Battlefield 1942 had any swastikas in it. They used this flag instead:
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/battlefield/images/f/f7/Flag_Germany_1933.png/revision/latest?cb=20110515025250
"Germany in Battlefield 1942 is based off the Third Reich, though the game omits any references to Fascism, Nazism or Hitler,"
again, dlc is unblocked now.
it's just some odd overzealous filter. doesnt make sense to have in an m rated game but I don't think its malicious like people are trying to make it out to be.
“Anti-competition”
Didn’t they publish both games before having bought thes studio
"titanquest" is censored, "itanfall" isn't. My guess is it's picking up tit. Free DLC isn't censored, but a lot of combinations with DLC are and aren't censored depending on the words, with no apparent rhyme or reason.
This nontroversy reminds me of this story except this time people are taking it seriously because it's fun to hate on EA and identity politics are hip.
People tested that. Titan wasn't censored but tit on itself was
No it’s actually censored because of a conspiracy theory I came up with after wathing a youtube video titled “Titanfall didn’t just die... it was MURDERED”
they also had them publish at a time that the game just couldn't survive
tbh as far as I can tell they didn't want it to take sales away from battlefield, no reason other than that to kill the studio like they did
I think the conspiracy theory right now is that DICE is using a text filter to push their radical progressive social justice movement. I didn't even get that from r/KiA or /v/ that's actually what is being posted on the man Battlefield subreddit.

how embarrassing
