CSS and extensions don't change anything, it's just broken.
Ah, so it's not just me. I had some settings randomly reset so I'd just assumed it had to do with that but even after fixing them they still seem to be largely broken. Though they sporadically do work for one page load and then break again the next chance they get.
Is tracking protection turned on?
It's not for me. It was the first thing I checked since that's broken Twitter embeds in the past. Hilariously it's working right now when I actually want it to error out like normal so I can't give the exact information but the errors I saw in the console and network tabs in Firefox had to do with RavenJS iirc in the console and I want to say it was a 402 or 502 error in the networking tab. Looking it up on Wikipedia I'm guessing it was probably 502, that one sounds correct:

502 Bad Gateway
The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server.
For me twitter embeds have been broken for a long time(a few months at least) for seemingly no reason, i copied this entire firefox profile over to a linux machine on the same version of firefox and it worked fine so i figured it was just some bizarre facepunch specific edge case incompatibility with windows 7 firefox. Doesnt work on a fresh install either. *shrug*
