Unlike Nixon though, I don't think Trump is smart enough to resign.
Even if he were, he's too arrogant. Resigning would be admitting defeat, and he can't let that "filthy sandmonkey" who came before him actually win as the better president.
At least Nixon was man enough to actually attempt to make amends in his later life, Trump is too ALPHA to do such a thing.
Knowing Donald, I guarantee you if he does get impeached he'll find some way to brag about it.
"First president to be fully impeached- WOW! Really shows you how rigged it was folks."
If he does get impeached, would it be the American people draining the swamp in one last instance of irony on his way out?
I actually don't know too much about Nixion and what he did after he resigned.
Trump is a someone who's had always had everything handed to him on a silver platter. That man can't solve problems by his own skills and merit if it meant heaven or hell. That man only knows how to be in charge but not how to be a leader. That man doesn't know what he pays people to do, he only knows how to take credit for it if it goes well or to blame everyone else if it goes poorly. I never had a high opinion of Trump even during his candidacy, I thought he was a slimy liar, as billionaire businessmen tend to be, who projected his privileged circumstances of birth as if it was personal skill that brought him there and not "a small loan of a million dawlers".
However in light of his recent behavior I'm pretty convinced Trump can barely be defined as a human being anymore. He's like the logical extreme of all the lighthearted exaggerations of businessman characters on TV and of celebrity worship. The problem is he's fucking real, like a bizarre mirror image that takes everything about publicity and being rich and contorts it to be utterly hostile towards you as if saying "you wanted to be like this" and to punish you for your insolence.
The faster that clown and his circus is out of political office, the faster the world can return to... fighting against Russia's information warfare and backroom business deals with corrupt western politicians. I hope.
He won't be tweeting much from Fed Pen.
I doubt it, as long as Republicans still control the Senate and the House, the only way Trump is leaving the White House is either in 2 years or in a coffin.
If he doesn't get impeached, it means at least one thing to me. You can do damn near anything short of murder as the president and get away with it no matter how much of the populace wants you out.
He'll do the opposite instead, whatever that is
Stick to his guns, get impeached, and hopefully face the full might of the law.
Just make sure not to piss off the oligarchs
He'll carry on insisting he's winning bigly forever. Even if he was handcuffed and wearing a comically orange jumpsuit, his last speech would still be about how the country's been robbed of its greatest presidency by a rigged witch hunt, and that Hillary should be in prison instead. The sad part is his support base will still believe in him.
For the record, Nixon didn't actually authorize the break-in at the Watergate facility. Yeah - you heard that right. It was some subcommittee acting autonomously (The Leaky Plumbers) and Nixon's crime was covering it up.
I don't know what this says about Trump if "History is repeating itself" ...
that only happens if the GOP loose the senate and house, which 2018 is a bad year for the senate to flip, though 2020 is an astoundingly bad year for the GOP senate since the reverse is true and they have large amounts of senators on the ballot.
Someone should make a bot that tweets trump "tick" one day and "tock" the next day, every day until his impeachment. He checks twitter constantly so he probably see it eventually
And at that point he's put in an insane asylum because he's gone nuts and thinks he truly has won and is stuck in a world where he, well, won the world.
Then again, that is already happening, sans asylum
Trump called Obama a filthy sandmonkey? When was that?
The CHAD trump vs the VIRGIN nixon
It's up in the air whether trump himself definitely worked with the russian government to win the election but he definitely obstructed justice by firing comey.
It's not so different in that the reaction to the allegations of crime caused him more problems than the crime itself.
Knowing the world today, tick tock tweeting Trump at the same time every day would probably get the Secret Service sent to your door thinking it's a threat
In his later years, he was respected around the world as an elder statesman and went on dozens of diplomatic missions to improve relations, and spread goodwill. The Chinese loved the hell out of him and always welcomed him with open arms every time he came to visit since he was the first president to take them seriously and visit them. Nixon didn't die in disgrace either. He had a large, state funeral which I think every living ex-president came to and if you didn't know about the downfall of his presidency, you would think he was one of the greatest presidents of all time going by that funeral and how well regarded he was in his later years.
I don't see Trump doing any of that. Best case scenario is he goes back to selling steaks.
I have worries that should Trump be impeached, he may actually just say "no".
I do not know what will happen to my country at that point.
Optimistically, he just gets escorted out of the White House and nothing else happens. Though what will his die-hard supporters do?
Objectively untrue.
Listen to the Slate Podcast “slow burn” for highly detailed events. Nixon knew.
That is honestly what I'm afraid of too, a lot of his supporters are likely crazy enough to revolt if Trump has to be forced out of the White House.
Technically, any law enforcement officer has authority to arrest the President for any crimes they have sufficient grounds to believe he committed (to the same standards as arresting anyone else). It's just the the standing assumption is the President is immune to law enforcement while in office.
If he has been impeached and refuses to leave, he's not technically the President anymore and his immunity is gone, so DC cops could roll in on the White House with an arrest warrant.
In practice, any law enforcement action would need to go through the Secret Service, assuming they don't grab him first. I mean, they're the SS, but so far they aren't the SS.
He wrote a couple of essays condemning his actions, published a book or two. From what I can remember, public opinion of him toward the end of his life wasn't too bad. He's still ranked as a pretty terrible president, but he gave an effort afterward and that's all that matters.
Nixon was a decent president, good foreign policy, mediocre domestic afaik. But he was a paranoid son of a bitch who kept lists of his enemies (liberals and black people) and was really tricky Dick by using the
good ol' Communism dogwhistle.
You guys just need to look at Australia, our government kicks out and elects a new prime minister every second week like it’s nothing. Give it a twirl.
