I probably wouldn't have suspected a fucking stick of a dynamite either tbh.

And there was me thinking "why the fuck would you try to light a can"
Why the hell would you leave dynamite sitting in the basement of house when you moved out.
To trick someone into lighting it thinking it's a candle
I have a lot of dynamite. It's hard to keep track of all of it
the title feels a bit misleading because it makes it sound like it was actually a full stick of dynamite when it was like an m80
How the fuck did someone even get a hold of that.
Police reports say the victim had a previous altercation with a Mr. "Coyote, Wile E."

I thought dynamite was legal for land owners and farmers and such? I know in some places in Europe you can blow up rocks and such on your land. Knowing America I imagined it to be a much easier process to get hold of this stuff.
Yes and no. Typically most produced explosives require special permits and have special transportation requirements. As such your avarage Joe isn't going to be able to just order up some TNT or SEMTEX and have it delivered to their door. However, it is legal (at least federally) to produce your own explosives for personal use to an extent. So you could mix some household chemicals and make an explosive, and so long as you don't try to transport it or weaponize it (as that would then be construed as a "destructive device" inder the NFA) you can use them on your own property to your heart's content. This of course is just at the federal level, different states and local governments have all sorts of different laws across the country.
