Purely illustrative image of a green licence plate, the final design will be part of the consultation process.
Clean cars, vans, and taxis could be equipped with green number plates under new plans to promote awareness of ultra-low emission vehicles.
The special plates, which are already used by countries like Norway, Canada, and China, could be available on green vehicles like electric and hydrogen cars, and are thought to encourage take-up among drivers.
As well as promoting zero emission vehicles, green number plates could help support local incentives for electric vehicles such as access to bus or low emission vehicle lanes, electric charging bays or ultra-low-emission-zones.
The plans are part of a forthcoming government consultation announced today (9 September 2018) which will seek views on whether green plates could work in the UK, and if so, what they should look like.
The consultation could pave the way for the addition of the eye-catching plates to UK vehicles in the next few years.
...
The consultation will consider potential designs for the plates, which could include entirely green on the front, back or both sides of the vehicle, or a green symbol.

I'm ready to have my car's color scheme absolutely ruined
TBH if this was a thing in America it would attract vandals and people who do rolling coal.
Coal rollers should be jailed.
mandate pink licenses for all diesel trucks especially if equipped with coal rollers. fuck those people with a splinter covered stick.
I would definitely protest if I bought a beautiful black or white Model S and had it smacked with a pea green numberplate. I also imagine this could cause serious problems for ANPR cameras and ANPR guided speed cameras.
Car manufacturers other than Tesla already identify their green models with a lovely blue accent which I think almost everyone finds agreeable if not quite good looking. Government needs to butt out. If we need a green car identifier, it should probably be a green mark or something of the like where the EU symbol used to be.
When the consultation starts I would say something along those lines as well. I'd be okay with the text being green instead of black though, or having something sort of symbol on the right of the plate.
I could see some issues for those that go into the EU if you changed the country part of it, it would probably be better to add it to the right side instead of the left.
