"I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff." All kinds of stuff, gee, that sure does sound like something a knowledgeable person would say.
Well...did she cheat? If she didn't cheat then this "freakout" maybe does make sense.
American 12-time Grand Slam singles champion Bille Jean King, one of the founders of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) backed Williams, saying: "When a woman is emotional, she's 'hysterical' and she's penalised for it. When a man does the same, he's 'outspoken' and there are no repercussions. "Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same." The issues began when Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou made a hand gesture towards her early in the second set at New York's Flushing Meadows - the rules say "communication of any kind" between player and coach is banned in Grand Slams. Williams denied she received coaching, saying she would "never cheat to win and would rather lose", and demanded an apology from the umpire Carlos Ramos. Mouratoglou, however, later admitted coaching. ... After the match Mouratoglou admitted he was coaching but added: "I don't think she looked at me." He also said Osaka's coach was doing the same and that "everyone does it". In her post-match news conference Williams said she was she "was not being coached" and that she "did not understand" why Mouratoglou would say he was doing so. "I just texted Patrick, like, 'what is he talking about?' Because we don't have signals," she said. "We have never discussed signals. I don't even call for on-court coaching [which is allowed on certain occasions in WTA events]. "I'm trying to figure out why he would say that. I don't understand. I want to clarify myself what he's talking about." hmmmmm
Coach cheated and admits as much, Williams not seeing it doesnt make it excusable, not a sexist issue. Simple as that.
she didn't cheat, but her coach broke the rules and communicated with her during the match. then she smashed her racket. then she called the umpire a thief. warning, point violation, game violation. there was no issue here but she made it such a big issue that the actual winner didn't get any credit and the story is all about Serena. And now that she brought up sexism, we're just going to stir up controversy when she blatantly broke the rules.
Seems like she has a case with his coach. I honestly don't know enough about the umpire to tell if he was sexist or not but she threatened him to end his career. Arguing that she just got "emotional" is stretching it.
I think serena was in the wrong here even if the things she said had merit. but I think she realized this by the end. https://twitter.com/JeffEisenband/status/1038547322270085121
oh well tbh... now we will get a completely non-cringe worthy men's final unless Djokovic destroys his racket too.
She also got fined as well. https://twitter.com/AP/status/1038817210540744705?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet
I watched a good portion of this match just by chance encounter at a restaurant, Serena got absolutely destroyed even removing all this referee nonsense from the game. She was just playing plain bad.

Good she got a punishment but then again: The money comes out of her prize money of $1.85 million as the runner-up to Osaka Oh well, I guess loosing the title is probably a bigger punishment anyways.
holy christ on a stick not this bug again, my EYES
Very light punishment for her. Osaka beat her fair and square and she though a tantrum like a baby and ruined Osaka's moment in the sun.
I was waiting for lens flares in her eyes I thought it was an advanced meme not a bug
Some might argue that her moment in the sun was highlighted by the contrast between her behavior and Williams'.
She cried while on stage because of all the booing and disappointment in her win. They stole her moment of joy from her, and Serena's actions played a big role in that.
If McEnroe was fine with being fined she should be too. You wanna make your point, pay your fee.
Pretty disgusting by Serena. Worst part is her tantrum has completely overshadowed the historic win by Osaka. Curious what FP's general opinion is of this 'racist' cartoon that came afterwards? https://www.3aw.com.au/herald-sun-cartoonist-mark-knight-internationally-slammed-as-racist-for-serena-williams-cartoon/
I'm looking over the clip and I really don't get how it could be seen as cheating. It looked to me like a simple indication to concentrate from her coach, not done kind of tactical advice
the rule is retarded. and considering nick kyrios, one of the biggest babies in tennis throws a tantrum then the umpire feels sorry for him and consoles him in order to play. it doesnt make sense how coaching is cheating either, it is a team effort.
Was a pretty shameful and disrespectful thing to especially to a fellow American player.
As warranted as some of the backlash is. The cartoon goes out of its way to exaggerate her racial features, you really cannot deny that it's racially charged
Ooga booga
Mark Knight is known for exaggerating the features of literally anyone he makes a cartoon of https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CxHoXVnVEAANRfX.jpg https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/17df14c7ca8be29add2ec2b93c93dc76 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DflAWzLWAAACWV6.jpg http://resources2.news.com.au/images/2015/08/24/1227497/163962-dd6a69e8-4a48-11e5-ba64-b40512aab75c.jpg People are overexaggerating the shit out of this
Nah, I could deny that. I'd argue it's simply a caricature. As evidenced above, it's what the artist does. In a way it could almost be considered more racist to deliberately downplay any particular feature that might be considered 'racist' to depict. Then you risk offending the same people for 'white-washing' and disrespecting her proud heritage, which you can guarantee somebody would bring up.
The pitfalls of identity politics We developed a nice workaround called "horrendously harass the damnable accussers"
Considering that the offending comic was the only image I ever saw of their work, you can understand why I would find it racially charged because of her depiction compared to the others in the comic, because I had little context. But I see I was wrong about that now, thank you for clarifying. But you could understand why someone could get the impression from the artstyle without any context,
its like maybe people should get context instead of jumping to conclusions :O
