Most successful week one for a Marvel game
PS4 exclusive Spider-Man is the fastest-selling game of 2018 so far.
It narrowly beat previous record-holder Far Cry 5 (which was available on more platforms), and sold almost double that of the previous biggest exclusive of the year - God of War on PS4.
Not only that, but it's the fastest-selling Marvel-branded game in history, beating previous title LEGO Marvel Super Heroes by a big margin.
It's also the fastest selling individual format game since the PS4 version of Call of Duty: WWII in November last year. Spider-Man is the latest in a long-line of hit PS4 exclusive single-player games.
It doesn't quite topple Batman: Arkham Knight as the fastest-selling superhero game this generation (in the UK). However, that game was released on more platforms and it also came out in 2015, when digital sales may not have been as strong as they are today (these UK charts do not include digital sales, and only count physical boxed units).
While it's not US sales, it makes sense; God of War had a damn strong push by Sony that became a super success, but God of War is still a Sony-based thing that only Playstation fans know. Spider-Man may be PS4 exclusive, but the character is one of the biggest comic book superheroes in the entire world, has a hype train rolling for him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with another movie focus in the works after a fantastic and successful reboot, and a fairly solid game from a prolific developer that already got their series a movie adaptation (albeit a mediocre one). This game couldn't have come at a better time with Sony rolling out strong exclusives again.
You forgot the source @Venomousbeetle .
Oh no, the source.
I got so caught up in what I was doing I forgot all about it.

I’ve been playing it and I fucking love it. One of the best told Spider-Man stories in my opinion. One where the pacing could only really be done in a video game. They really use the medium well.
From what I've seen, its basically spiderman 2 for the ps2 but with insane polish and a lot more content. Aka best game ever.
That's what happens when you make a good game.
It's the culmination of all the additions and good ideas the previous spider-man games had but with actual budget and time. I think simply describing it as "better Spider-Man 2" is a bit of a disservice to the massive amount of research and design that went into pulling from every previous game one way or another.
Even the two tie-in games to the shitty Reboots are accounted for in terms of traversal design.
I'm really glad this game turned out great. I was really skeptical when it was first teased on E3 since it ticked a lot of boxes of being a really scripted game that looks visually good but may be paper thin in terms of content and gameplay, but instead it actually ends up being one of the best open-world games this year and an overall love letter to the Spider-Man and Marvel Universe.
It's basically the Arkham games with an even bigger open world, and you're playing as Spidey; what's not to love?
My only disappointment with the game comes from the kinda barebones sidemissions when compared to the Arkham Games, since those all had a satisfying conclusion to them(Mad Hatter side mission in City for example), but the missions themselves are still mostly fun at least.
That certainly helps, but this game was guaranteed to sell well just because of the Spider-Man title.
I’m all for console exclusives unless they’re really good games ;(
One thing I find really refreshing about this game over the Arkham sequels is that its city is actually alive.
They didn't make up a terrorist scare/pretend people stay inside on Christmas or wall off a city to make a prison as an excuse to not have civilian NPCs or traffic or anything
This is great to see, not only does the game look great, but Insomniac really deserves to thrive in the modern game industry just as the other PS2/3 devs have (Guerrilla, Naughty Dog).
I'm inclined to disagree considering that even the best Spider-Man title since after 2's release way back when was only all right at best.
Very glad to see Insomniac's hard work rewarded, and anticipating picking up my own copy over the next few days.
That's impossible. Single player games without microtransactions are dead.
The thing is that they managed to make the open world feel good even if most of the mission usually consist of the same tasks over and over. The combat is so good that you want to drop in a sidequest and fight some baddies. The dreaded towers that unlock part of the map here don't feel as bad as they are in other games because if you see a tower, you just zip to it in seconds.
Games like Horizon in comparison fell flat to me because of how the open world didn't feel as good as it could've been, and most of the tasks and dialogues felt like a chore to get through.
