Tonight, the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony took place ahead of the 2018 Emmy Awards show. John Legend
has taken home the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for his
work as a producer on the NBC special “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in
Concert.” The newly acquired trophy makes him an official EGOT winner.
“Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and
Tony,” Legend said in an Instagram post. “So amazed to be in such
[rarified] air.”
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice—the composer and lyricist of the original 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar—took
home Emmys, making them EGOT winners as well. At 39-years-old, Legend
is tied as the youngest person to achieve an EGOT win with Robert Lopez.
He’s also the first black man to win all four awards. Legend has won ten Grammys, an Oscar for “Glory” (his Selma collaboration with Common), and a Tony for co-producing the Broadway play Jitney.
